The LaceNews Channel on YouTube – Update 7/31/11

I’ve finished the first pass at collecting lace-related videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews). Currently there are 1,054 videos organized into 56 playlists.  Within each playlist, the first sort is done on the YouTube member name that posted the piece (alphabetically). The second sort is on date of posting, with earliest first.  The third sort is on title (alphabetically), since many people post more than one on the same day.

The playlists are mainly organized by country, and then by technique (bobbinlace, needlelace, etc). In cases where a specific country is difficult to identify (netting, tatting, etc.) I list these subjects in their own playlists.  Bobbinlace Instruction is also a separate category, done without regard to country of origin, and I list this one first due to the importance to the lacemaking community.

YouTube makes it very difficult to alphabetize playlists – you can only do this with the first twelve.  I have some PHP code  that I will try to implement to get the rest alphabetized, but it’s going to take some study to understand it how it all fits together. Lots of people on YouTube complain about this.

I will keep searching for past videos, and would appreciate suggestions for additions. It’s easy to miss them, I found 11 more Spanish bobbinlace videos just today. But mainly I will do an update at the end of every month. July will take some time since I have to play a bit with keyword searches to try and catch everything.

I have a complete catalog of all the videos in each playlist in an PDF file, which you can download here: Playlist. I will post a new one each time I do the monthly scan.

Please send comments and suggestions to lacenews@gmail.com. Thanks!

Ebay Alerts! Six items – July 31, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3vsxquf SUPERB VINTAGE HND MD BLK CHANTILLY LACE FAN LEAF, C1850
Size:
6″ x 21.5″ wide
Starting price: $525 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends:
Jul 31,2011 07:48:34 PDT
Offered by:
Laura Allmond, Ebay seller allmndjy, Beautiful Central Pennsylvania!, United States
Comments: Yes, this has ended because some sneaky person executed the Buy-it-Now option today. But it is such a good piece that I thought I’d put it up anyway – the seller is very knowledgeable and it is worth reading her description. It is a very good ombre-shaded Chantilly fan leaf with the unusual addition of an embroidered initial in the monogram. Seller attributes it to Grammont because of the deep black color of the thread – that is something I’ve heard discussed among collectors. It would be a bit unusual for an ombre piece like this not to be French, and the design is the higher quality one also associates with French manufacture. Telling the difference between Belgian and French Chantilly has stumped the best experts, so I’ll reserve judgment until it arrives in the mail.

   Sold for $525.00, Buy-it-Now.

Size:
6″ x 21.5″ wide
Starting price: 14.95 GPB
Auction ends:
Aug 02, 2011 12:10:00 PDT
Offered by:
Ebay seller mansecats, Northumberland, United Kingdom
Comments: I wish people would lay pieces like this out flat for photos so you can see what you are getting all in one picture. Good Irish crochet collar with fairly large motifs. Raised centers, dense clothwork, especially on the shamrocks. single picots on the rectangular mesh ground. Looks in very good condition, other than a few rust marks I can’t see any damage.

Sold for 14.95 GBP, 1 bidder.

Size:
20 cm x 502 cm
Starting price: 87.00 EUR
Auction ends:
03 ago 2011 01:03:23 H.Esp
Offered by:
Ebay seller claud17114, Comunidad Valenciana, España
Comments: Good long length of black silk bobbinlace. Could be Spanish, but from the elaborate ground work, I’d also say Le Puy is a possibility. Then again there’s not a lot of gimp around the motifs, and the long thin tallies are of a little different character than typical Le Puy. I think this kind of lace was made in other areas of France, and maybe also in Russia. Someone should look into this.  Condition looks very good. Be sure that the seller will let you bid if you are outside Spain.

   Did not sell.

Size:
52″ long, 5.5″ deep at back, 2″ at narrowest, 4″ at ends
Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends:
Aug 05, 2011 15:00:18 PDT
Offered by:
Laura Allmond, Ebay seller allmndjy, Beautiful Central Pennsylvania!, United States
Comments: Good Duchesse de Bruges collar and front lappets with attached neckpiece. Some raised work, and no needlelace inserts or fillings. Seller says it is linen, which would be unusual and might account for a little stiffness in the work.  A few spots, but otherwise good condition.

   Sold for $129.16, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3hfsmd3 VINTAGE  HNDMD BELGIAN DUCHESSE BOBBIN LACE COLLAR. NR!
Size:
16″ neckline, 6.5″ at the point.
Starting price: $29.99
Auction ends:
Aug 05, 2011 15:02:43 PDT
Offered by:
Laura Allmond, Ebay seller allmndjy, Beautiful Central Pennsylvania!, United States
Comments: I like the asymmetrical design of this frontpiece very much. The needlelace rings included in the design not as fillings, but as accents to the motifs are quite unusual and take this well outside the usual Duchesse offerings. I agree with the seller, someone should take the added pieces off. A few spots, but overall very good condition. Linen thread? Not sure.

   Sold for $41.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/42bgdov VINTAGE HNDMD BELGIAN BRUSSELS BOBBIN LACE BERTHA COLLR
Size:
6″ X 43″
Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends:
Aug 05, 2011 15:05:49 PDT
Offered by:
Laura Allmond, Ebay seller allmndjy, Beautiful Central Pennsylvania!, United States
Comments: Quite an interesting piece. Sort of a grape leaf design which gives it an interesting edge. Note the little windows in a lot of the clothwork, quite unusual. It does have a very open feel due to extensive use of half stitch.  I almost wonder if this isn’t Belgian, but can’t immediately offer an alternative.  Few spots, but otherwise I don’t see any problems.

   Sold for $138.50, 10 bidders.

Chiharu Shiota, After the Dream, 2011

This will be the first event in the Fifty:Fifty Programme, a partnership with The Crafts Council and BMAG. It will feature the large-scale work of 20 artists (including Lise Bjørne Linnert, Michael Brennand-Wood, Tamar Frank and Chiharu Shiota) some showing in the UK for the first time. The exhibition will examine the potential relationship between architecture and lace structures, examining how such boundaries can influence how one moves through space.
BMAG’s lace collection will also be shown, and a ‘lace trail’ is being developed so visitors can walk through the existing galleries and spot lace in paintings.
