Starting price: $99.99
Auction ends: Apr 02, 2011 15:28:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nukid, Galesburg, Illinois, United States
Comments: Complete English windmill bobbinwinder, all pieces seem to be there. Nice spoked wheel.  Does have some wormholes.

Sold for $102.50, 2 bidders.

Starting price: $450.00
Auction ends: Apr 03, 2011 11:14:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A good length of early 18th c Valenciennes with fond de neige. I’m not going to speculate on the difference between Valenciennes and Binche, frankly I don’t think we currently have the historical information to tell them apart. This particular piece has a provenance, ex collection of Mrs. J. West Roosevelt, cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. The seller is showing other pieces from her collection. Hard to tell condition, and the blue background isn’t helping. But looks like a reasonable piece; not quite as densely woven as sometimes found.

Did not sell.

Auction ends: Apr 03, 201118:08:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Nice length of good Belgian needlelace, no raised work, but has some interesting fillings.  A few holes in the ground and one seam.

Sold for $153.00, 10 bidders.

Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends: Apr 03, 2011 18:36:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Good collar of Belgian needlelace, some raised roses, few nice fillings. Not the most ambitious piece, but it works well as a collar. I like the little basket, an unusual departure from all the roses you find in these pieces.

Sold for $138.15, 8 bidders.

Comments: Nice bold neckpiece.  Not really Maltese, I guess I’d call it a Cluny. Not really sure if it is silk. Unusually cordonnet, maybe a wrapped silk? But I really like the presence of this piece.  Nice condition from what I can see.

Sold for $27.00, 2 bidders.

Ebay Alerts! Nine items – March 27, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/4m5cw2f Fine 1890-1900s ORNATE Handmade Lace Collar SILK LUSH
Starting price: $64.00
Auction ends: Mar 27, 2011 19:14:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gb-best, Beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Good silk Irish Crochet doesn’t come up that often. The challenges of working with this thread gives this lace a rather distinctive appearance. This is a nice piece, well worked. Seller mentions a few broken threads, but they aren’t immediately obvious.

Sold for $84.99, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/46dm4cv ANTIQUE LACE-FINE 18THC ALENCON LACE
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: Mar 28, 2011 10:47:55 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Nice Alençon or Argentan border, late 18th c or early 19th c. An example of ‘Herren Alençon’, meant to be ruffled and good for gentlemen’s cuffs. Can’t tell if the brides are twisted or buttonholed.  Piece is a little short, but condition looks good; a very typical example.

Sold for $210.49, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $495.00
Auction ends: Mar 28, 2011 10:58:53 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Too bad about the sticks – this is a very nice piece of Belgian needlelace. Nice flat design, some good fillings. Can’t tell if the lace is damaged around the broken guardstick.

Sold for $495.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/4jqw9ek BOULLE DE DENTELLIERE.HAUTE LOIRE.XIX eme
Starting price: 3.00 EUR
Auction ends: Mar 28, 2011 13:32:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller rapatord, la roche blanche, Auvergne, France
Comments: French lacemaker’s lamp. Seller says that it is 19th century because the glass is thicker than 18th century examples. French focusing lamps from the Haute Loire region are different from English ones – the French examples sit on the round base with the filling ‘neck’ at the top. The glass sometimes is supported by a turned wood or metal stand – these rarely survive. English examples normally have a lower projection that fits into a holder, and can be filled either from the top or bottom (tube is plugged with a cork for the bottom fill case).
This example one looks in very good condition.

Sold for 87.50 EUR, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4ffdxqj DELFT BLUE & WHITE FIGURINE DENTELLIERE BRUGES 2391 a/f
Starting price: 4.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 29, 2011 07:34:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lorrart, Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: Delft lacemaker, 6″ high.  Note the word ‘Bruges’ on the front of the pillow. Has condition issues, broken bobbin and chair, some chips on the base. But these don’t come up that often.

Sold for 21.51 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4gvpko4 19thC SUPERB HM CHANTILLY LACE VEIL
Starting price: $525.00 for bids, $585.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Mar 29, 2011 17:07:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Leeds, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: An impressive looking large square Chantilly shawl. Wish there were a photo of the whole thing, I’m a bit confused about the right and left side edges toward the top of the photo.  Expected seam separation is present, some of which is repaired with a simple overcast stitch. A few other holes. A similar Chantilly square shawl was sold on Ebay in May 2009, similar price range.  Origin of these pieces is unknown. The actual work has large areas of half stitch, appropriate to the scale.  No ombre shading.

Did not sell.

http://tinyurl.com/49unnv4 Antique Bobbin Lace Collar HONITON & Lappet FANCY LUSH
Starting price: $185.00
Auction ends: Mar 31, 2011 11:17:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gb-best, Beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: This is, of course, not Honiton, but the rarer and very elegant Valenciennes de Gand. A beautiful piece, looks in excellent condition. Val de Gand is actually a pieced lace – many of the motifs were made at the same time and combined into various patterns joined by an unusual square bobbin mesh with only 3 threads on each plait. This helped reduce the manufacturing time.

Sold for $410.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4hgcvwc Grandes collections de dentelles Charles Schmid 1906
Starting price: 49.00 EUR
Auction ends: Apr 02, 2011 07:19:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mariop2583, Paris, France
Comments: This work, produced in 1906 as an exhibition catalog, was published by Charles Schmid, Librairie Générale de l’Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs.  Not to be confused with A. Calavas, Librairie des Arts Décoratifs, also from Paris, who was a great publisher of similar works. It is one of a number of large portfolios of lace photographs (in excess of 20 different works) produced around this time. I’ll have to do a LaceNews post on these in the near future. Plates are browned, but reasonable. Looks like two of them are duplicates, which isn’t good. But this is quite a rare work.

Sold for 75.99 EUR, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4uzpydy TURKISH ANTIQUE NEEDLE LACE OYA – LACE FLOWERS
Starting price: $18.00
Auction ends: ~27 days
Offered by: Ebay seller sunnymailbox, Istanbul, Turkey
Comments: I put this up mainly because this seller is the place to go for everything you want to make Turkish Oya knotted needlelace.  Take a look.

Still available.

The Educational Silk Museum of Como was established in 1990 to highlight the history of the Como silk industry. It has published a number of folders on the technique of various silk bobbinlaces, which can be found on their ‘publications’ page.

Over the years the museum has sponsored several lace-related events, including a biennial bobbinlace competition (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011).  This  year’s event, the “4° Concorso
Europeo per un merletto a fuselli – 2011” is sponsored by the European Parliment. It is open to artists from all  EU countries and Switzerland; entries have been received from the Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, France and Spain. Rules for the event can be viewed here: eng_bando_2011 – entries were due January 28th. The major material for all entries must be silk, and designs based on a silk pattern from a 1940’s wooden printing block. Competition entries and winners can be seen in one section of the exhibition. About 20 lacemaking organizations in the Lombardy area are also displaying their works, with silk materials emphasized. The exhibition theme is “I 150 anni dell’Unità d’Italia 1861-2011, Storia e memoria in terra lariana e lombarda”.  Past contest entries and winners can be by clicking on various years at the bottom of the above web site.

Como is in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy on the border with Switzerland, which includes the city and comune of Cantù. Entries from past years include many laces from this area, as seen in the above photo which shows typical Cantù equipment. Lacemaking centers like Cogne and Tignes are also nearby, but I don’t know if they participate in the exhibition.

Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States

Starting price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 27, 2011 12:29:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller bramblepatch, llanelli, Carmarthenshire, United Kingdom
Comments: Title is wrong, this is a nice Flemish Pottery lacemaker, probably from Turnhout. Seller doesn’t go into detail about ‘minor chips’. Still a good example.

sold for 26.99 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4g9hbdm Superbe Rouet Ancien Dentelière Fuseaux Art Populaire
Starting price: 28.00 EUR
Auction ends: Mar 27, 2011 12:36:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: The only problem I can imagine on this piece is that is was probably a windmill bobbin winder, but the windmill part is missing. Seller has put a spool of thread on the spike that would normally hold the vanes. Otherwise it is great! Note the sliding spindle arm, and the raised feet.

Sold for 30.50 EUR, 2 bidders.

As a response to a comment on this piece I’m attaching some photos of very similar Haute Loire region bobbinwinders in my collection.  Note the extending arm for the windmill in the example on the left – the windmill itself has been taken off in order to show its supporting peg. A second example with the arm fully extended and windmill attached is shown on the right.

It may be that the example for sale has no windmill, but I think that would be unusual. And there would be no particular need for the long sliding handle unless it was to make allowance for the windmill blades.

Starting price: $300.00
Auction ends: Mar 27, 2011 13:20:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller seizan21, Kitakyusyu,Fukuoka, Japan
Comments: Interesting piece of Buratto, I don’t know how old. Some colored threads, with main work cream against a brown weave. Mounting fabric looks really dirty. But overall good condition, could clean up nicely. The buratto piece itself looks cut on the right end, with an additional fringe added later.
