Comments: This appears to be three pieces joined together, each a different pattern.  They are what we now assume to be ‘Binche’, mid 18th c. There are some interesting ‘medallion forms at the top of the photo, while the midsection has a more obvious candelabra symmetry.  The bottom shows the same symmetry, but a little more obscure.  I find it a bit odd that they are all the same width – I wonder if the first section might be cut along the bottom. Overall this is three good samples of a fairly rare lace.

Comments: A collar and cuff set of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Delicate design with knots (sometimes picoted) and groups of three stitches used as grids fillings. Interesting effect which might not be really obvious – the mesh follows the line of the motifs, not a rigid overall horizontal pattern.  Also note the widely spaced knotted picots. The design, which is not what you first think of in Point de Gaze, fills the space well.

Comments: A bertha of Branscombe mixed tape lace – Maybe.  Lillie Trivett has a book out on Branscombe and her examples are a little heavier than what we see here. I do see lots of what she calls ‘flat cutwork’ (the little round motifs), although it’s hard to say how they are made.  Overall I’d have to say that this is a lighter piece than typical Branscomb, with a wide variety of filling stitches.  It leaves an impressive effect, which is something you don’t often see in these laces.

Comments: A border of Valenciennes with a round-hole ground variation. Unusual arrangement of the motifs, rather scattered throughout the piece.  Line-drawing in the motifs delineate their shapes.

Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends (secured at one end), may have been trimmed top and bottom slightly. Picoted edge is a later addition. Engrelure added.
Damage:  Some pinholes and small holes in the mesh, especially at one end.
Soilage: Occasional brown spot. Seller cites some age browning at the bottom edge.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar. Interesting brides with 4 leaf clover motifs at the intersections. The tightly woven motifs have lots of raised work, unusual design. The looped outer borders are also not typical.
