The group formed back in 1985, and March 2010 saw their 25th Annual General Meeting!  Founder Maureen Bromley states:  “It only seems like 5 minutes since the Society was set up.  We are now looking forward to our 30th year of Lacemaking!”
Meetings are held 4 times a year (January, March, May and November). The AGM is at the March meeting, and an Annual Lace Day is held in September. All meetings are held at the Marist Hall, Cottingham Road Baptist Church.  Wolds demonstrators can frequently be found at various other events throughout East Yorkshire. Administrative: Pinterest Maps

Today I got a note from Pinterest saying that they are removing the mapping feature from their boards. I’ve been using this on the LaceNews Pinterest site, http://tinyurl.com/n4y49b2, especially to map the location of lace museums. I was never particularly happy with the feature, and some LaceNews readers agree. Therefore we are working to recover the mapping capability that was used in the Lace Fairy site which was much better than anything used in Pinterest.  We will describe this in detail when it is ready.

By the way, there are now 81 boards and 1,911 pins on the LaceNews Pinterest site, all related to lace.

Comments: A high-end market Point de Gaze fan leaf with multiple raised petal roses. Note the clothwork used as fillings in a striped pattern which is unusual. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, I especially like the grids of knots.  Naturalistic floral design, well advanced from the more conventional raised petal rose motifs.
Provenance: None cited.

Damage: Scattered small holes and pinholes in the mesh. Some small repairs.

Auction ends: March 6, 2016, 10:20 AM MST
March 6, 2016, 10:55 AM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: These two are an interesting comparison so I’ll review them together. The first is a Duchesse de Bruges piece,  I think it is a fan leaf.  It doesn’t seem circular enough to be a collar. The second one is a deep collar, much the same design as the first, but it looks like it is largely made of pre-made tape, more along the Princesse line.
The first is a good example of middle-market Duchesse design, a staple of many lace manufacturers. It’s not surprising that manufacturers would seek to imitate it with a more tape-lace technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None on the collar. I am questioning the fan leaf edges – one doesn’t look completely finished, but not really cut off. The other edge looks like something that would go on a guardstick.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos on either.
Soilage: Both looks clean.
Finish: Vertical fold creases on the fan leaf. The collar looks slightly shrunken, perhaps from washing or just the limitations of the technique.

Comments: A Bertha of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. It has a very light design with small circular esprits in the ground. Decorative ‘mode’ fillings of alternating needle-made rings and knots are used in flower centers. A good middle-market product.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Damage: One small hole along the neckline. A few stray threads on the outer edge.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse border with an elegant Point de Gaze flower with raised petals (not a rose) worked directly into the pattern with no ground mesh.  Needle-made rings are used as fillings in both bobbin and needlelace.  Irregular picoted brides.  The design is a short repeat with interesting floral and leaf work, well beyond conventional Duchesse.

Comments: An elaborate 19th or 20th century Gros Point interpretation. Note the tightly covered sculpted raised cordonnet, and the varied clothwork. I’m guessing Italian, but it is very difficult to attribute origin to pieces like this.  Other possibilities include Ireland, Belgium, France, and Austria.  A definitive identification work on the subject is badly needed (notwithstanding the conference on the subject held at the Textile Museum in St Gallen in 2011 – interesting but it didn’t solve the problem.)  This piece is quite exuberant and has a lot of life mainly due to the varied types of clothwork. The sheen of the thread looks like linen, but hard to tell from the photos.
Provenance: Private collection of a large estate.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Occasional fraying in the raised work.
Soilage: A few brown storage marks.

Comments: A long wide pieced bobbinlace that I think is a Bruges product. It isn’t the typical Bloemwerk – there is no gimp and the motifs are large and a little blocky.  There is some halfstitch shading, but the main ornamentation are the center veins of petals and leaves which give some direction and definition to the clothwork. Given the scale of the work I think the motifs are larger than they look in the photos.  It is a sign of good design when something like this can look good in both a large and small perspective. Note the ‘islands’ in the middle of the irregular picoted brides, which you do find in Bruges work.
Provenance: Private collection of a large estate.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: March 6, 2016, 7:08 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller gjg64, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Comments: A high-end market Point de Gaze fan, no raised work, with Mother of Pearl sticks. The lace is of such high quality that I’m surprised they didn’t use something more elaborate in the sticks.  The design is quite naturalistic with extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings, especially the little circles and knots in the grid pattern.
Comes with original box labled “Madame Mercier, Trousseaux, Bas de Luxe, Dentelles & Eventails, 26 rue Mather, Paris. The tassel has also survived.
Provenance:  This comes from the collection of Francis Maude McCray (1892-1976), the wife of the Chairman of the New Bedford Edison Electric Co. in Massachusetts.  They had no children and Mrs. McCray was a collector of American furniture, fans, calling card cases, and Chinese export items.  Most of her collecting was done from the 1930s through the 1950s.  The fans and card cases were left to her niece and they have been in storage since then.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Pt d G mesh looks good.

Offered by: Ebay seller atticcon, Birmingham, Alabama, United States
Comments: A Chantilly fan with Mother of Pearl sticks in an elaborate standing frame. The lace is back with silk. The lace design is typical romantic florals and swags, not too elaborate. The fan doesn’t quite fit in the case, so the left hand guard stick is not visible.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos on the lace. Some splits in the silk lining.
Soilage: There might be some brown spots where the right hand guard stick is attached to the lace, hard to tell from the photos.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Comments: A heavy silk guipure triangular dress front with attached choker collar. ‘m reasonably sure these are two separate pieces.  Note the very dense leaves sometimes raised against halfstitch ground, also the heavy gimp thread around some motifs.  I’m thinking this is a French Cluny piece, perhaps from Brioude.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None. Sewing to a backing fabric
Damage: A little worn around the neck edge.Gimp is loose in one place.
Soilage: Seller cites a rich cream color. Looks clean.
Finish: A little wrinkled around the edges, especially the neckline. Seller says it is intact.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A long collar of Brussels Duchesse with a raised petal rose in the central Point de Gaze insert.   Naturalistic floral design – I like the interruption of the neckline pattern with flowers and leaves.  Some raised work in the bobbinlace on halfstitch backing in the scrollwork.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few frayed brides in the bobbinlace. The Point de Gaze mesh has been replaced with a tulle backing. That whole insert looks a little messy.
Soilage: Isolated brown spot along the neckline.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A long border of Irish Youghal needlelace. Everything about this piece is classic Youghal, from the scalloped foot edge to the very interesting filling stitches and the picoted brides.  The repeat is short with flowers and leaves including windows in the cloth stitch and ring decorations against the more open work.  Excellent example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Seller notes that one end is finished, the other cut.
Damage: Occasional minor pinhole in the clothwork.
Soilage: Seller cites “antique white colour”.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A insertion of Belgian Rosaline Perlé. I think the perls here are needle-made, and that same kind of raised work also extends into some of the flower centers. Note that there are needle-made fillings in a few motifs, which is unusual. Most Rosaline has a bride background, but there is a second time without brides as in this example. This later 19th c lace is one of my favorites, especially the ‘bride-less’ kine which has an unusually clean appearance.
Provenance:  From the private collection of a large estate.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Modifications: One end looks finished, can’t see the other end.

Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbin-and needle-lace applique on machine net. There are some small decorative ‘mode’ needle-made fillings, along with a large hexagonal motif and leaf spray along the lower border completely needle-made. This piece has an elegant romantic floral design with a short repeat.  Carefully drawn naturalistic flowers and leaves of excellent technique. Note the small esprits in the rest of the ground.
What is most unusual is that this appears to be the end of a much longer piece, and one end is just plain tulle, never having been embroidered.
I wish there were more.

Offered by: Ebay seller things*most*delightful, Sacramento, California, United States
Comments: I don’t often review table linens – there are plenty of these on Ebay and the needlelace ones don’t often deviate from one or two basic designs. This one is more adventurous showing an elaborate hunt scene. No napkins or other set pieces.  It might be Italian, but it’s often hard to attribute a place to pieces like this.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 1st quarter 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional broken bride.
Soilage: Seller cites light ecru color. Seller says it has been ‘carefully hand laundered’ but gives no details on the process. A few faint discolorations remina.

Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: March 7, 2016, 12:24 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller Ihanrahan, Phoenix, Arizona, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse deep collar, and there is one raised petal rose at the back of the neckline, the rest of the Point de Gaze inserts are flat. Note the elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings, especially the grid arrangements. It has an elaborate romantic floral design.
Provenance:  I spoke to the seller about this piece, it was purchased by her mother who got it at an estate in San Francisco. The cloth is signed by E. G. Nelson on the back, who according to the note was the last owner documented in the attached note. The note gives the history of the piece back to Mme. Roentgen, although no dates are given.
Date: The Roentgens were married in 1872 and this piece is consistent with the 4th quarter of the 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Piece is basted onto fabric.
Damage: A few separations of the Point de Gaze  from the bobbinlace.
Soilage: Looks a little beige in the photos.
Finish: Fold creases, and the pieces has been fit so it lies flat on the fabric. The motifs seem a little shrunken, probably from a past wash.

Comments: A Point de Paris border, of the type we often see originating around WWI. The tag appears original and says ‘Made in France”. It has a simple, elegant design with a curving trail and restrained florals.
I think someone should investigate the connection of laces like this with earlier Pottenkant designs – many of the techniques are similar.

Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Damage: Holes along the top edge. Racroc split along one side. I think there might be one repair near the right point. Difficult to evaluate since it is photographed on the rough texture rug background.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with a Duvelleroy box. The sticks are thin, made of a dark elaborately inlaid Mother of Pearl (the seller calls this Tahitian dark mother of pearl).  The lace itself is very fine, probably a French product. It has a design of florals sweeping across the leaf.  No esprits, no  ombre shading.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some repair to the sticks. Lace looks intact.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: March 9, 2016, 5:26 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller 1996forward, Littleton, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A Chantilly triangular shawl.  I assume the cat does not come with it.
The lace is dark black, might be a Belgian product. Typical romantic floral design with lots of strapwork. No esprits, no ombré shading.
Provenance:  None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some tears along the top. Might be consistent with cat claws but are probably the result of trying to undo some kind of fastening.  Some of these are racroc splits. There are also some pinholes, and a few weaknesses in the halfstitch.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Some creases along the top edge.

I must object strongly to the cat sitting on this piece, which probably took 10 women a year to make. We need to respect the lace, the designers, the thread spinners, the marketers, the former owners who ensured its survival, and above all, the women who made it.

Comments: A Carrickmacross applique rectangular shawl with a solid provenance. There is a little guipure work at the ends. Good needlerun fillings, and note the raised rings in flower centers.  Typical looped picots around the edges.

Comments: A fan of Rosaline, but it’s an a typical Rosaline design.  Not so structured – the design is a bit scattered. It is a bit on the Duchesse side, although the technique is pretty much Rosaline. Including some perls that I think are needle-made. The seller says the sticks are horn.

The Van de Weile auctions are held twice a year, in March and October. The largely concern antique books.  This time they are offering the art collection, archives and sculpted Flemish Pottery works of Achille Vande Voorde. He was the most famous maker of the Flemish Pottery Lacmakers – see the LaceNews post at http://tinyurl.com/4baktku for details.  Additional items are being sold on Friday, but the lace-related ones are on Saturday.
There are a few lots of lace starting with #661, and lace-related books are scattered throughout the auction. But the real interest is a number of rarely seen Vande Voorde lacemaker figures starting with lot 703.  The ‘sleeping lacemaker’ figure, lot 708, is something I’ve never seen before.  Another listing, item 770, appears to be a stand used to make lace caps.

Bidding:
– There is a 24% buyer’s premium on the last bid, including VAT and related fees.
–  Telephone bidding is possible on lots with a minimum estimate of 250 euros, contact Nathalie Van de Wiele before Thursday, March 3rd.
– A written bid form may be mailed or faxed or emailed (see the second to last page of the catalog).
– Online bidding can be done through Invaluable, and will be charged an extra 3% – see catalog for more details..  You must register for the auction at the Invaluable site.
– Payment is due immediately after the sale in cash. Payments can be made via Bancontact.  Payment by Paypal must include an additional 5% of the total amount of the invoice.

Size: 44″ long, not sure where that measurement was taken.
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: February 28, 2016, 7:59 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller mctiques, Winterport, Maine, United States
Comments: A Chantilly shawl – probably triangular. Hard to tell from the presentation.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: This is a big week for point ground black lace.  Here we have a Chantilly triangular shawl which has been modified into a kind of cape form, especially around the collar area.  The lower point and ends seem to have survived. Typical 2nd Empire romantic floral design.  The ‘cape’ form modification is more typical of the end of the century.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Lined with off-white silk. There’s some a lot of modification to add the collar, which might be made of segments of the original shawl.Seems to be some shaping seams down the back,
Damage: Two racroc splits a few inches long. Scattered holes and pinholes throughout the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Hard to tell because of the modification.

Auction ends: February 28, 2016, 9:50 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A long insertion of Irish Crochet – hard t tell if it is Irish or French. It is of the ‘imitation guipure’ type, which has a ground that appeared fairly early on, but also includes flat motifs. No sign of the typical ‘trefoil’ arrangement f motifs – this piece is tending more toward the later Rose of Sharon design.
Provenance: This piece was included in a box from a long closed convent in France – no further details.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Finished both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says the piece has been freshly laundered, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles – probably because of the laundering.

Comments: A wide border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Fairly simple but effective design, and note the grids of picoted needle-made knots used as fillings.  Single knots also used as fillings. I’m a bit puzzled by the mesh filling used at the very edge, it has a different size than the main tulle foundation.  I think it’s bobbin-made.
No esprits in the main ground.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Seller cites 5 small breaks in the tulle, some small holes, 3 cm detachment from the header in one spot.
Soilage: Seller says the piece has been freshly laundered and is ‘snowy white”, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles – probably because of the laundering.

Comments: A medal celebrating lacemaking from Via do Conde, Portugal. A rough translation of the inscription around the edge of the first photo is “vocational training of youth supported by the European Social Fund” (see http://tinyurl.com/zjw9m2f for information on the fund). The small inscription reads something like “Europe in Solidarity” with the date 1988. The back shows the coat of arms of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vila do Conde, which is a church begun in 1525, and is a monastery today. Their many programs include outreach to children, but what the exact connection is with lacemaking is or why 1988 was important is unclear.

Comments: A fan of high quality Carrickmacross guipure, with insets of applique.  Note the spiked picots in the body of the fan, and the more typical looped picots around the top. You find this in high-end market pieces like this one.  Note also the excellent needlerun fillings in the applique portions.  Overall design and technique are excellent.  My only gripe is the Mother of Pearl sticks – they might have gone with something more elaborate for a piece like this.
Carrickmacross is not often found in fans.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites 2 missing ‘brin’ tips, and since the seller is a fan collector, pay close attention to her terminology. The ‘brin’ is the top portion of the fan stick.

Offered by: Ebay seller betsycrnfa, Mesa, Arizona, United States
Comments: A Maltese silk lace fan.  You don’t often see fans of Maltese, the lace is a little heavy for the form. This example uses a lot of the 6-sided star mesh with guipure beyond the standard Maltese crosses. These are characteristic of better quality pieces.  Note the interesting contrast with the roundels down across the center of the piece. I’m not sure how the rest of the sticks were made, but they go very well with the lace.
The guardsticks are a colorful inlaid Mother of Pearl.

Comments: Most of this Chantilly piece is shown in the thumbnail. The lace appears to be a heavy dark black color, probably a sign of Belgian manufacture.  It is likely a small headcover. No ombré shading and the designs are fairly simple.
Provenance: An estate piece.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos, just some overall wear.  I wonder if it has been washed in the past.

Comments: A veil of Embroidered black net, a little too long for a bonnet veil. The massed flowers at the bottom end are reminiscent of Blonde de Caen. The embroidery is tambour, with a lot of emphasis on thin lines in the design, occasionally filled in with more tambour.
Provenance: Estate piece.

Comments: An square veil of black Blonde de Caen. Very typical massed lower border of flower sprays, with large leaf/flower motifs used in the rest of the piece.  Two fairly large racroc splits near the bottom border.  A piece like this is a rare survivor; this lace does not age well.
Provenance: estate piece.
Date: 2nd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None, I think, but I can’t see the top of the piece.
Damage:  Occasional tiny hole / pinhole in the mesh. I think there might be a few attempts at repair – hard to tell against the white background that has a lot of lines in it.

Comments: An Chantilly triangular shawl with naturalistic drawn florals. Ombré shading brings out the relief in the design.  There’s an interesting filling used in some of the strapwork which further brings things into relief. This piece with its elaborate pattern is a high-end market item.
Provenance: estate piece.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Damage:  Some localized small holes/pinholes in both the mesh and half-stitch.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Many small creases in the piece that show up as black lines in the photos. I thought hard about whether these are actually repairs, but eventually decided they are just creases.  Don’t try to remove them without professional advice.

Comments: A Catalonian Blonde ‘ret-fi’ mantilla. This form is quite typical, with a roughy triangular centerpiece surrounded by a deep fringe. The rectangle at the top goes over a woman’s haircomb (the peineta). This type of lace is usually made in strips (which don’t always match), and that construction is quite obvious throughout this piece. The design is very Moorish in character with a lot of arabesque work. It is also a Spanish technique to use the 6-pointed star filling. This lace may or may not have half-stitch relieve – I see a little of that here.  The clothwork is quite dense in the border of this piece, and a little looser elsewhere.
I’ve seen four others of these come up for sale on Ebay since I’ve started keeping track in 2010.
Provenance: estate piece.

Comments: A Burato figural embroidery with plaited bobbinlace border.  Burato is a leno weave, and this type of lace was first made in the 16th century. However this is a more modern piece, probably late 19th, early 20th c Italy. Or perhaps Sardenia.  It has a striking slightly primitive pattern with Adam and Eve and the Snake. It also has a very typical three part design with two smaller borders top and bottom with a deer pattern.  The bobbinlace is a Venetian-style plaited design. The overall design is quite interesting, with excellent technique.

Comments: A triangular shawl of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  You have to look hard to see which motifs are bobbin- and which are needle-made; they blend quite seamlessly.  Grids of needle-made knots and rings, sometimes picoted, are used as fillings. No esprits in the tulle.  Note the occasional woven tally filling in the bobbinlace.
The overall design is less Second Empire florals, and more Art Nouveau with the paisley pattern. So I think it’s a slightly later piece than the typical crinoline shawl.  Overall quite an impressive piece.

Comments: A Honiton guipure collar. Well done snails/slugs style. Note the varied woven tally leadwork fillings. Woven irregular picoted brides.  The clothwork weaving is tight and even.

Comments: A small Youghal needlelace collar. The very heavy gimp is a little atypical for Youghal, although I have seen similar pieces in the past. Usually the edge treatment of motifs is a loosely spaced double twisted stitch. So I’m a little unsure what to make of this piece.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A triangular shawl of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net. Needlelace applique is much less common that Bobbinlace applique.  The work consists of a large floral spray in the main point, with smaller sprays on the ends. A narrow border surrounds the whole piece, and small sprigs are sparingly used as esprits. The piece has a very light appearance.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar with two oval Point de Gaze inserts in the points. These are largely composed of decorative ‘mode’ fillings stit5ches – no raised work. There are also single needle-made rings and knots used in the centers of bobbinlace flowers.  The bobbinlace is well executed with motifs that are a little more naturalistic than usually seen.  Good design composition, and I especially like the designs worked into half-stitch. Not raised work, just an integral part of the clothwork.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘original cream lace patina’
Finish: Soft vertical fold creases.

Comments: A long border of square-mesh Valenciennes. Typical 19th century design of rather bulky flowers and leaves with single circular esprits.  This is a good example of a type of lace often used to trim linens and nightclothes.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbin and needle lace applique on machine net. The motifs are small and well-done, with the flat Point de Gaze roses confined to the corners. Lines of needle-made knots are used as fillings in the bobbinlace. Note the care with which the inner border has been sculpted.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Fraying along edges. Not sure where these are coming from, the photos don’t enlarge on my computer.  Some pinholes and a possible small repair to the tulle.

Comments: A high-end market handkerchief of Point de Gaze. Excellent flat work, and the decorative ‘mode’ fillings used in the strapwork, rose centers, and as isolated small medallions. The design is very dense from the edges to about halfway in, yet the overall effect doesn’t seem crowded. I find the motifs a little conventional – the very best Point de Gaze takes more chances in the design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage:  Occasional pinhole in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites “original cream patina”.

Starting Price: $2,250.00
Auction ends: March 1, 2016, 8:11 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A very large Brussels Duchesse lace which has been made into a skirt.  I don’t know if that was it’s original intention, and it’s hard to get a look at from the photos.  It’s a little confusing, but was probably originally some kind of skirt flounce. There are large flat Point de Gaze inserts, and the bobbinlace motifs are fairly large.  Large dresses of Brussels Duchesse are not unknown, and this could be an example.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications:  Made into a cylinder as for a skirt, although I’m confused by the wastline measurement. One seam going 15″ down, at least.  Small part of the engrelure missing at the top.
Damage:  Seller cites a few tiny repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites “original cream patina”.
Finish: Some soft folds.

Comments: A Point de Gaze collar with long frontpieces. Raised petal roses. Unfortunately all of the photos are taken from the back side, so I can’t tell how elaborate the raised work might be.  Decorative ‘mode’ fillings used effectively in strapwork and the rose centers. Romantic floral design, quite effective.
Provenance: Metropolitan Museum of Art deaccession.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.

Damage:  Localized small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks like some red discoloration.

Comments: A short Point de Gaze lappet scarf, no raised work. Interesting decorative ‘mode’ fillings; in fact the whole design is a little unusual. The whole piece is a little short with deeply scalloped borders. Note the widely separated looped picots on the edges.

Comments: A large piece of a larger Duchesse de Bruges very wide flounce. Probably originally a skirt flounce. There are a few needle-made rings in flower centers, and some raised work on halfstitch background in the swags.  Very dense ‘flower garden’ design effect.

Comments: A rather beat up John Rennals token dated 1668. I wrote a LaceNews post on the early English lace tokens at http://tinyurl.com/7hen2gh, and there is a similar example illustrated. Although if this one has the initials ‘R.I E’, or ‘I.E.R.’, it would be even more unusual than it already is.  Very hard to read this example.

Date: 1668
Condition:

Damage:  Badly worn.
Soilage: Probably as clean as it’s going to get.
Finish: age patina

Comments: A small round piece of Point de Gaze, which is an unusual form. Might be a doily, although this is not a typical form for this kind of lace.  It looks like an exercise in decorative filings, very neatly done. No raised work. Note the rather large, stiff picots around the border.

There’s a set of lace-relate books, lot 167, however the lace itself starts with lot 318.  Note especially:
#318  Crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, 52 cm x 480 cm
#320  Blonde narrow scarf (28 cm x 161 cm) reputed to be from the collection of the Empress Eugenie. The provenance omes from a previous Paris auction. It does have a large “N” monogram with a crown and bees, and the quality is quite high and the design is appropriate to the 3rd quarter 19th c.
#327  Mid 18th c Mechlin lappets, joined at the center.
#328  A group of 18th and early 19th c laces including some Mechlin, Binche and others.
A few other lots including some early laces.
