January 9, 2017 10:58 AM PST.

Comments: Valenciennes insertions are useful, but a little rare. In #1 these are fairly simple, a single line of leaves in the two two, and an interesting line of ovals in the bottom one. In #2 the top three insertions have a more undulating pattern. The bottom tow are simple slightly scalloped borders.
Provenance: None cited.

Damage: Nothing obvious from the single photo.

Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Occasional weakness both the top and bottom border, minor.
Soilage: :Seller cites pale ivory color.

Size: 22″ x 42″
Starting Price: £8.00
Auction ends: January 8, 2017 10:11 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An elaborate Chantilly hat veil. Note the top line of holes for threading the gathering ribbon. Elaborate romantic floral design, almost too detailed for a hat veil. No ombré shading, but various filling stitches and gimp work do gives some dimension to the halfstitch. An impressive design which has seen better days as far as condition goes.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Racroc splits, other holes and general wear.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller sophocles352, Ocala, Florida, United States
Comments: A wooden carving of a Belgian lacemaker, no maker given. Well detailed, with some staining and burning? coloration. We usually think of such pieces as German, but this is obviously a Belgian subject.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: crack across the right shoulder.
Soilage: Hard to tell. Face looks clean.
Finish: Expected patina.

Date: ~1900
Condition:

Starting Price: $165.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: January 9, 2017 9:41 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Chantilly fallcap. The thread looks thick and black, probably a Belgian product.  Interesting design with three points on one side of the headpiece and one on the other side. You see this in Honiton sometimes.  The lappet ends are quit thick.  Floral design with honeycomb fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few loose threads, minor.  Occasional knot in the mesh, might be from changing threads?
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Light wrinkling and some fold creases.

Size: 13″ x 46″
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: January 10, 2017 10:00 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A probable Belgian needlelace applique on machine net. Given the rather large width and the rolled top edge, this might be cut down from a larger piece. Still, needlelace applique in a form like this is unusual. Light florals along the lower border and up the sides, single sprigs used as esprits.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: May be cut down from a larger piece.
Damage: Three pinholes in the tulle, 2 small breaks along bottom edge. A few pulls in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little minor wrinkling. Nice drape to the net.

Offered by: Ebay seller gstroh, Rock Hall, Maryland, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with carved Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks.  It has the nicest repair to a guardstick I’ve ever seen. Excellent Art Nouveau floral design, no raised work. This is a higher end market piece, even without much in the way of decorative fillings. Comes with box.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One repaired stick. Lace looks OK.

Comments: A Beds insert with typical pattern of a single central piece with separate plaited edge added at the neckline and outer border. Note the raised tallies on the leaves in the central part. Good design, typical of Armstrong manufacture.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 1st quarter 20th c.

Size: 17.5″ x 45.5″
Starting Price: $850.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: January 11, 2017 5:39 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller curated_store, Dublin, Ohio, United States
Comments: A runner of Brussels Duchesse. I don’t think the petals in the Point de Gaze inserts are raised, but there is raised work against halfstitch background in the bobbinlace. Both in leaves and the swag-work. This commonly seen in higher quality Duchesse. Most of the Point de Gaze are single roses, except at the ends where there are rows of decorative ‘mode’ fillings with regular PtdG ground.  Unusual to see this quality Duchesse in table linens.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a light cream color. Also says it has been hand laundered (no details) and lightly pressed.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $750.00
Auction ends: January 11, 2017 10:25 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A large tablecloth of Cantu bobbinlace. It has two techniques – the typical scrolling vines with 3-headed flowers and hooks, along with inserts of what might be called Point de Milan.  This is usually taken to mean pieced bobbinlace with a needle-made ground. The photos aren’t close enough to tell what kind of ground it has, it might be a bobbin plaited ground.  It is actually nice to see these two technique together, since it can often be difficult to attribute origin to this type of pieced lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: early 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: This type of lace with the rather stylized large motifs and variations on snow grounds and fillings is sometimes seen in the French Alps lacemaking regions, like Queyras. They are typically freehand laces.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Matching cuffs of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Buttonholed rings are used as esprits. Only some tiny needle-made knot fillings, and no raised work. Interesting shape and pattern.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A l
Provenance: Probably and Italian piece.  Tape lace border, and what really strikes me is the extended Venise-type plaited center. I can’t find any seams, wonder how they got such a large piece done. Wish there were closer photos.
Date: 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Starting Price: £30.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: January 11, 2017 1:56 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller gate196, Fordingbridge, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish crochet collar. Irregular picoted brides.  The non-traditional motifs have no raised work, but do have nicely finished edges. Some interesting filling stitches. A lot of square edges in the design, and most clothwork is double crochet. I think the thread might be linen, it has that kind of shine.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Broken upper right tip.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Starting Price: £120.00
Auction ends: January 12, 2017 10:13 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Louis XV style Alençon. The floral design is a little plain, without the typical Louis XV undulations. Might be a little later in style. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings along the border and in flower centers – these really make the piece.
Provenance: From the collection of Margaret, Marchioness of Crewe, her daughter, the 9th Duchess of Roxburghe, and her great aunt, Lucy Cohen.
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, secured on one end.
Damage: Some pulls and tiny repairs to the mesh. Unusual to find mesh of this period in such good condition.
Soilage: Seller cites mid ivory color.

Offered by: Ebay seller redgleen2, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with a lighter Rose of Sharon pattern inside, and heavier guipure motifs on the outside. This can be a very effective combination.  Good raised work in the motifs, and note the pinwheels of 3 shamrocks between the roses along the border.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Yellowing along the neckline.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting pieced lace with heavy gimp. It doesn’t have typical Bruges motifs, and I’m particularly struck by the motifs along the lower border. They resemble things found in Italian needlelaces.  It is possible this is an Italian piece. Interesting design, good technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: early 20th C?
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: A few loose threads.
Soilage: Seller cites pale ivory color.

Comments: A pair of long Cantu lace runners with figural work. Most of the figures are embedded in the traditional cantu scrollwork. Birds have a bobbin-made ground inside ovals. These types of pieces don’t come up too often, but are a well recognized form.
Provenance: None cited.

December 25, 2016 9:30 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller things*most*delightful, Sacramento, California, United States
Comments: These two pieces are quite similar. The first is a table cover of plain-weave linen with a reticella insert and a Venise-type plaited bobbinlace border.    The second os a patterned linen cover divided into three parts. Each has a reticella border, and they are divided by an insert with a technique I don’t recognize. It looks like Reticella, but is not really integrated into the cut and drawn linen like the reticella is. I think it is a single base thread buttonholed over, but am not certain. It has a Schiffli look. The same technique is used for the Punto in Aria edging.
High quality imitations of early linens were done in Italy, although at this time it’s very difficult to attribute a specific origin.  Perhaps Aemilia Ars.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: If Aemilia Ars, 1898-1914

Damage: A few detached brides on both.
Soilage: :Seller cites ecru color, with faint storage marks on both.

Comments: A runner and 12 placemats edged in Rosaline Perlé. I’m not sure if the perls are bobbin or needle-made, but I suspect needle. Excellent design and technique. Quite unusual to find Rosaline used in a large table linen set.
Seller says the set might be unused since it came in the original packaging.

Comments: A pair of Irish Crochet cuffs. Interesting design with a lot of elements – heavy floral and brides above, very light almost ‘snowflakes’ in the scallops. Well done rose in the top center with a little raised work. Seller thinks they might be designed to sit at the elbow.
Provenance: None cited.

The standing collar has denser patterning, and no halfstitch shading. Halfstitch is extensively used in the round collar.

Auction ends: December 28, 2016 11:48 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Two Honiton guipure collars and one cuff, they don’t match.  All snails/slugs style, and the middle one appears to have a heavy needle-made ground.  The work in the middle one is quite dense, and the trefoil leaves almost resemble Bruges work, but with no heavy gimp. The top one has picoted  plaited brides, brides in the cuff are plain.  All have good woven tally grid fillings. I especially like the rose/leaf combination in the cuff.   Altogether a nice set with varied styles.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges shawl collar with lappet ends. There’s a separate narrow collar slightly gathered to the neckline; might be cut to fit toward the front. Some raised work along edges, but mostly gimp.  Picoted irregular plaited brides, and the little circles in the brides remind me of Bruges patterning. For the greater part the motifs are not typical Duchesse. Single woven tallies are the only fillings, no needle-work that I can see.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: There is no full picture of the whole piece.  Coraline or Point de France?  Hard to say, but Point de France does tend to have a hexagonal ground (note the unusual double picots). The swirling design of the clothwork perhaps doesn’t have the rigid symmetry of candelabra French designs which might mean Italian. The lower edge is quite elaborate, perhaps Italian. But we don’t have many documented Coraline examples, and those appear to be more sprawling in design  I think I’ll go with French on this one, but only about 60% sure.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, snails/slugs style, hard to tell but I think the ground is a large hexagonal bobbin-made mesh. Thistle design in two corners. It looks like the photo has been taken from the back side.  The technique is a bit loose, with woven tally fillings. I especially like the ones used in the thistles.

Comments: Three Beds collars The top two have something you see a lot of in beds, a patterned neckpiece with a separate edge frill.  In these two pieces the neckpieces are the same.  The bottom collar is made in one piece but still has the same two-part feel.  The designs are typical of what was done in the Armstrong workshop.

Comments: A cape made in two parts of muslin applique on machine net. Themotifs looks attached with tambour, which is a sign of Belgian work. Some of the motifs are embroidered with what might be French knots, and there’s some needlerun patterns used as fillings. The pieces appears to be made of three parts, a deep collar with two flounces. I’m not sure how the lower flounce is attached; the upper one is sewn to the lower edge of the collar. Excellent pattern matching of all pieces, with florals and leaves, small sprigs used as esprits in the ground.  Nice presence to this piece.

Comments: A fan of Point de Gaze, a high end market product. Multiple raised petals on the roses, and the needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings are excellent, both singly and in grid form. Naturalistic florals and strapwork.  The carved and inlaid MOP sticks compliment the piece nicely, and note the original tassel.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border, no raised work. Foral motifs, but with an architectural look caused by the ‘fence’ running through the middle of the design. Note both the interesting top of the border, a solid strip, quite unusual.  The picots at the bottom are spiky and widely spaced, sign of an unknown manufacturer. Rows of picoted rings form fillings in the ‘fence. Interesting, effective piece.

Comments: Another Point de Gaze border, no raised work. A higher end market piece with floral swags and a ribbon/bow design.  Closely spaced teardrop shapes in the border separated by a lattice grid filling. This piece doesn’t do as much with the decorative ‘mode’ fillings as the one above, but is no less effective. But both these pieces experiment a little with clothwork. The widely spaced looped picots on the bottom indicate the same manufacturer as the previous piece.

Comments: A Burano needlelace mat with some areas of raised work..

Comments: An interesting fallcap of Eastern European lace.  It is all tape lace, and the center part is formed to fit the outside edge. There’s also a 6-pointed star filling along the outside. The work is quite loose, and the thread may be linen.  Note the woven leaf flowers in the centers of some motifs.  I’ve never seen anything like it, although it might be something from the Yelts area.

Comments: Two Maltese silk round collars. The first has an unconventional design, yet it builds on the more traditional collars. The neckline ‘wheat ears’ are quite heavy and separated. The guipure work around the edge look almost like birds -overall quite a bold appearance. Comments: An Irish Youghal needlelace collar. Ebay Alerts! Twelve items – December 11, 2016

http://tinyurl.com/j285ugn A fine antique Nanduti lace sun lace pina thread shawl 1910s
Size: 58 cm x 194 cm
Starting Price: £92.00
Auction ends: December 11, 2016 9:40 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A Ñanduti rectangular shawl.  Interesting Sol motifs some of which which appear to be arranged in rows along the length of the piece. Smaller pieces of this quality usually have the palm leaf motif along the edge. But I’ve seen several rectangular shawls which do not, as in this piece. Piña fiber was used pretty exclusively in the Philippines, not Paraguay, and the Ñanduti pieces from South America are cotton.  The sol motifs in this piece are a little more open than typical, but I’m reasonably sure it’s a Paraguayan product.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1950
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says it has been carefully laundered but gives not details on the process. Now ‘snowy white’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: £220.00
Auction ends: December 11, 2016 10:32 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A high-end market handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Good technique in the floral design, and note the ring esprits scattered through the ground (probably needle made).  No elaborate ‘mode’ fillings, just a few knots and rings in flower centers. Also note the attention paid to the the lace where it meets the center cloth.
Provenance: Seller purchased it in Paris.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites  a pale ivory color.  Small red rust marks in the lower left corner near the center cloth.
Finish: Horizontal fold crease.

232164167694   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/hcl3es8 A Beautiful Antique Brussels Point De Gaze Lappet C.1890
Size: 96 cm x 8 cm
Starting Price: £32.00
Auction ends: December 11, 2016 10:38 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A lappet scarf with unusual ends, of Brussels Duchesse.  No raised work in the two Point de Gaze inserts – and note the elaborate 8-petaled decorative ‘mode’ filling. The bobbinlace is densely arranged toward the ends, more open near the center. Conventional motifs, no raised work in the bobbinlace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Per seller, there might be a pinhole in the PdG mesh, photos not close enough to tell.
Soilage: Seller cites  a few age marks. Has a beige color from the photos.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

351925477683   Sold for £34.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/grhm26d Beautiful antique French 19thC Chantilly lace crinoline shawl matilla sequins
Size: 120 cm x 265 cm
Starting Price: £280.00
Auction ends: December 11, 2016 11:11 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a handmade triangular Chantilly shawl – difficult from the photos to discern the pattern. But someone went to a lot of work to embroidery all the sequins and small beads on. I’m a big fan of these shawls, but not of the embroidery. It could probably be reversed.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: The sequins are not original.
Damage: One small tear in the ground.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace. Seller says some sequins tarnished.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Starting Price: £92.00
Auction ends: December 11, 2016 1:34 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Scottish Border, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. A middle market piece with floral design and esprits in the ground. There is some bridework fillings in larger motifs at the end. Interesting decorative ‘mode’ fillings of needlemade ring and picoted knot grids.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle, minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little wrinkled, but it might just be the drape of the tulle.

http://tinyurl.com/zyww8ln Vintage – Antique Mother Of Pearl And Lace Hand Fan
Size: 24″ wide when open.
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: December 12, 2016 11:13 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller silverado.2013, Bay Shore, New York, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. No raised work in the lace, and it has some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Good naturalistic design. Comes with original box  tassel.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Lace has come away from the sticks at one end. Two broken sticks, also some repairs to the sticks. There are signs that the lace is tied to the sticks, which helps in condition.  Lace itself seems OK and PtdG ground is good from what I can see.
Soilage: A little beige.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

172433918730   Sold for $78.00, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/zkmy532 19th C.Brussels bobbin and Point de Gaze needle lace Wide Edging COLLECT COSTUME

Starting Price: $151.00
Auction ends: December 10, 2016 7:00 PM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller silverado.2013, Bay Shore, New York, United States
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The needlelace is whiter than the bobbinlace. Note the connected line of picots on the bottom edge and on some motifs – an imitation of Alençon horsehair. Raised rings and some grids of rings in various forms used as fillings in the needlelace. The bobbinlace is quite delicate with small motifs in vine patterns.  The needlelace design at the bottom is a little different from the rest of the design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory/light ecru color.  The piece has been washed and seller says it is ‘clean’.

Comments: A jabot with attached neckband of Bruges Bloemwerk. Very typical leaf and rose motifs with woven square fillings, and a little meshwork filling.  Nice bold design, unusual piece.
Provenance: Seller says it is ‘from Scotland’.
Date: 1st quarter 20th c.

Comments: A mat surrounded by an interesting Lille or Beveran border. Hard to tell but it might have been made to fit the piece.  Very unusual to see this type of lace used on linens.

Date: 1st quarter 20th c.
Condition:

Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: December 13, 2016 11:14 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller halcyonevintage, Woodinville, Washington, United States
Comments: A shawl collar of black silk guipure. I’ll say it is Le Puy given the elaborate ground around the neckline and the use of halfstitch in fillings.  The long narrow woven leaves  and halfstitch scalloped edging are also found in other Le Puy examples.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

Offered by: Ebay seller chantillydreams, Bloomington, Indiana, United States
Comments: A rectangular shawl of bobbinlace applique on machine net. I think it’s Belgian, maybe from the Bruges area. Mainly because of the fairly simple motifs (although very nicely arranged), and the bar ground fillings. This would be an unusual piece for a Bloemwerk type of lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: It is seamed across the middle.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: An interesting Point de Gaze butterfly. These are basically mid 20th century tourist items. The clothwork is very solid, and there are minimal decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Very crisp, nicely made, but not as elaborate as other examples.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: mid 20th c.

Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Brussels bobbinlace lappets with droschel ground. They have the undulating style of Louis XV, but the design has a simplicity and openness that signals a coming change to the much lighter designs in the last part of the 18th c. Not much variation in the filling stitches.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front. This type of tight work with elaborate grounds is usually associated with French manufacture.  The design uses only one flower with slight variations, and a design of ovals around the neckline. Nice transition from the simple picoted square ground on top to the heavy Clones knots surrounded by flowers below.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges shawl collar with long front points. Raised petal roses are used along he edges next to the bobbinlace, while the Point de Gaze inserts have simple sprigs. Good raised work against halfstitch background in the bobbinlace.  The design is quite dense but note the leaf orientations. They almost look a little windswept.

Comments: A triangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Romantic floral design, and the motifs are quite large. Small circular esprits in the ground. A lot of these shawls are dated 3rd quarter 19th c, but I’m thinking given this might be a later piece. It doesn’t have the fine detail seen in earlier pieces.

Comments: This seems to be the week for good Duchesse de Bruges. Here’s another example, a small collar. The raised work on the ‘pansy’ designs along the outer edge really make this piece. It does a lot with conventional motifs.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks and the original tassel. Raised petal roses, which is a little unusual for a fan. They add a stiffness that sometimes interferes with folding. Detailed romantic floral design, and I wonder that it wasn’t given better sticks.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  The design is very simple, a short repeat narrow border, and widely scattered single leaf esprits in the ground.  It seems to have the nice dense tulle associated with Nottingham that drapes so well.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Some loose threads at the top where the engrelure is attached – this is not the narrow band with holes for stringing a ribbon.

Comments: A bertha collar with pointed scallops of Venise needlelace, picoted bride connectors. I’m thinking it’s an Italian piece, especially given the rount motifs used along the outer edge. http://tinyurl.com/juv4mgd Huge Chantilly Lace Triangular Crinoline Shawl – 1860s – Wonderful design
Size: Not given.
Starting Price: £65.00
Auction ends: November 27, 2016  7:34 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller supa_troopa, Redditch, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl. Fairly large motifs in the central floral design, in other places the motifs are more compact. No ombre shading. It can be difficult to maintain constant tension over large areas of half-stitch, and it’s nicely handled here. There’s no photo of the piece spread out, but you can see some nicely handled strapwork along the edges.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Two pieces modified and assembled together.
Damage: Scattered holes in the mesh.  Seller cites a repair to one corner.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Looks like some creasing in the photos, but this might just be how the piece is draped.

Size: 5.75″ x 168″
Starting Price: £160.00
Auction ends: November 27, 2016  10:25 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller mummybuffy, Plymouth, United Kingdom
Comments: See also a matching, but slightly shorter length #291948684212.
Early 19th c Alençon border.  This is similar to but lighter than the later 8th c ‘Herren’ Alençon. It has 8 rows of ‘esprits’ in the form of small buds, and a single flower in the pointed scallops. This is a much more feminine design than earlier pieces, and is meant to be ruffled. The flowers have some decorative stitches in the clothwork, and ‘modes’ are limited to single or double rings.
Provenance: From a Cornish estate
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Réseau fin looks in good condition (unusual for a piece of this age) although seller cites ‘one or two stretches’ with no further details. The leaves in the lower flowers look to have holes, not enough closeups to really examine this.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: £95.00
Auction ends: November 27, 2016  10:34 AM PST.
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Three rows of small flowers used as esprits, and the main floral design is well defined and of excellent technique.  Picoted knot grids, rings, and plain knot grids used as fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, the other end is unfinished in the working process.
Damage: A rather crude repair to the mesh about 1/3rd of the way from the cut end. Hard to tell, but I’m wondering if t his isn’t the beginning of a repair that would have been made to a defect in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A collar with long front points or dress front of Honiton guipure. Snails/slugs style, scattered florals with a flower repeat along the outer edge. The inner neckline might be a separate addition – it has a needle-made ground not present in the main piece.  The whole design looks a little thrown together. Good technique with extensive leadwork fillings.

Comments: Brabant lace is a general term for lace thought to have been made outside of Brussels. It varies a lot in quality. It is a pieced lace combining both bride and 6-pointed star grounds. This piece is typical with an undulating trail filled with vertical bars and zigzag connections. The speces in the trail have floral motifs with 6-pointed star ground. Elsewhere are individual motifs with bride gound.

Comments: A border of late 17th c Milanese with an elaborate floral design, and a double-headed eagle. Tightly woven and decorated clothwork as well as numerous fillings make this example very high in quality. The ground is a roseground variation, and note some woven leaves used as accents.  An additional border which might be Binche has been added at the bottom.  Wish there were more of this.

Comments: This seller has several handkerchiefs from this collection. They are largely made up of early laces re-purposed as handkerchief edges (#332038687639, #232150942102, #332038702948). One with a Mechlin edge, #232155335710, has a more original work, even though the Mechlin is in the style of the mid 18th c.
I’ve been staring at this Valenciennes handkerchief for some time trying to decide if something similar is going on.  Many of the motifs (largely fleur de lis) do not match well in the pattern, however any joins are extremely well done.

Comments: A round hole Valenciennes border. It has the look of 3rd quarter 18th c, plain clothwork with ‘line drawing’ to define the motifs. But it could be a later copy.  Would be nice to determine the fiber, linen or cotton.

Comments: I agree with the seller, these lappets have the feel of English Devon. Not quite as refined in design as contemporary Belgian examples. Motifs are made separately, connected with small brides, and they have the same snowflake fillings as Belgian work.  However an exact attribution is very difficult. See the example in the second photo of a set from my own collection, which I feel a little more confident in an English origin. But not much.

Comments: In the past two weeks a number of exceptionally long, excellent laces have appeared on Ebay, found by the seller in the Netherlands as a family collection stored in a box. Some are already on their way to join my own collection.  From the condition and general style I’m guessing these might date from around WWI.  This example is a Rosaline Perlé length, and the perls look needle-made.
