Ebay Alerts! Twenty-three items – June 26, 2011

My apologies for the length of this piece. I would have divided it more evenly with last Thursday’s post, but it was so hot that my computer rebelled and refused to go further. I dragged the A/C into the office today and managed to finish.

http://tinyurl.com/5w58wye ANTIQUE LACE-FINE EARLY MILANESE LACE
Size: ~78″ x 6.5″
Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jun 27, 2011 08:25:49 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Milan, 2nd half of the 17th century, the irregular ground in these laces are some of the earliest attempts at mesh grounds. This piece has a lot of similarities with figure 202 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”.  The top edge looks a little funny – crowded and one leaf might not all be there., wonder if it was cut. Can’t really say for sure. Milanese laces usually have quite bold edge treatment, but photos on this piece aren’t close enough to tell. It’s a wonderful piece.

$56.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Narrow Honiton ‘slugs & snails’ border. Conventional design, good condition with a few minor openings. But it is really long.

   Sold for $35.00, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Wide Brussels application border – bobbin and needlemade motifs on machine net. Looks in very good condition – with pieces like this  you have to pay close attention to the state of the net. Design is OK, small dots int he net indicate a little extra effort. The motifs themselves are pretty standard, and there aren’t any ambitious fillings.  But the condition of this piece looks very good.

Comments: This piece was featured on LaceNews back in March http://tinyurl.com/6ergksz – failed to sell at $510.00. I usually note relistings on the original LaceNews post, but this one is so outstanding that I want to make sure people don’t miss it.  An outstanding piece. Bid high.

Comments: Swedish bobbin winder of the Mattson & Mora type, which later became G. Andersson. The name on the gear plate the logal of Glimåkra, the Swedish weaving company. The form with the appropriate adapter is more normally used to wind weaving bobbins. They have a web site at http://www.vavsked.se/eng/index.html, but I can’t find the winder in their current equipment list.

Comments: Two needlelace depictions of the Belgian and French coats of Arms. I think these are Belgian, looks like Zele work.  Aside from a broken bride here or there, they look in good condition Seller does note a few repairs. Both are framed – watch the glass in shipping. It’s tempting to call something like these ‘War Lace’, but we don’t really know when they were made. But the quality is quite good. Both pieces I think are a lot whiter than they appear in the photos against the brown mat.

Comments: Irish crochet coat from the estate of Dr. Dorothy Dean – has further provenance. The piece is a lively combination of small motif material and large motif (French?) flower accents.  I like the cut very much, almost a kimono style. Few small openings and minor spots.

Comments: Impressive looking piece of Burano needlelace. I like the quality of the fillings in the pomogranite motifs. Probably had cuffs in the original set.  A few spots, no breaks or holes that I can see.

$123.52, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by:  Ebay seller heartnsoul1, NEW ENGLAND, United States
Comments: Large Duchesse de Bruxelles shawl. Not enough detail in the photos to get a really good look at the entire piece, so it’s hard to determine the pattern, or if it was cut down or assembled from some other piece. Also can’t really see the the edge finishing. The design is very dense and it’s photographed to give quite an airy appearance. It does have a needlelace star filling at the centers of the daisy-like flowers. The petals of the flowers are interesting, not just a ‘sunburst’, but with some twists and overlaps.  I don’t see a lot of the typical Duchesse raised work – more on the Bruges side with just a heavy gimp and a little loose in the clothwork. Condition looks very good, but I’m having a little trouble forming an overall opinion on this piece.

   Sold for $1,800.00, 10 bidders.

Starting price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 28, 2011 08:49:47 PDT
Offered by:  Ebay seller abfabs05, East Anglia, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton handkerchief – large center part kind of overwhelms the lace. The lace itself is snails&slugs, but I like the little row of tallies around the edge. Gives it all a kind of Maltese look. Very minor defects, in fact I’m not sure I can see what the seller is talking about in the 2nd to last photo on the listing. Overall, it’s a nice little piece.

No bids.  Relisted as #290582369852, Buy-it-Now GBP 19.99.

Comments: Good Irish Crochet collar with scalloped edges – note alternating motifs in the points. I like the overall design. Single picots on the brides, can’t tell if they are Clones knots. Rised rings in the centers of the 6-petal flowers. Overall an effective design. Looks in very good condition, seller says it is very white. Maybe bleached? Who knows.

Starting price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 28, 2011 09:05:55 PDT
Offered by:  Anne Fortesque, Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton handkerchief with a good, deep edge of lace. Small inked initials in one corner of the cloth. Border of roses, thistles, roses and shamrocks inside. A few loose fillings and a bit wrinkled, but overall very good condition. It’s got that kind of ‘thrown together’ look in snails&slugs design that can be charming or really awful. I think it works rather nicely in this piece.

Sold for 22.01 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6jd9dfm VERY PRETTY HONITON LACE COLLAR. BEAUTIFUL FINE QUALITY
Size: inside neck ~22.5″, depth in center ~4″. 13.5″ across.
Starting price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 28, 2011 09:10:54 PDT
Offered by:  Anne Fortesque, Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton with a needlelace reseau. I really should know more about this form of collar – sometimes they are called ‘dress fronts’, and the large part goes at the front. Makes sense – sailor collars are for children. Opinions are welcome. Odd choise of background for the photo – photographing white lace on light backgrounds always brings out every defect. But it gies this one a nice, light feeling, and it does seem to be in very good shape (maybe a repair or two in the ground if you look closely). Still in the slugs&snails phase, but much more half stitch than in the handkerchief this seller is also offering. Along with the ground, it has a lot less dense feel.

Sold for 24.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by:  Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Very good Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. Good raised work in the bobbinlace, and the needlelace roses are more innovative than the typical raised petal ones. The needlelace and bobbinlace roses are also effectively combined and contrasted. Interesting use of needlelace fillings along the inside edge. A good, dense design that speaks well for this kind of lace. Minor defects.

Comments: I wish seller would put up a large photo of the entire piece – it’s hard to deduce the entire thing, especially the edge finishing from the fragments shown. This is an important piece. Look at Elisa Ricci’s “Old Italian Lace”, figures 16, 17 and 19 to see other examples. It’s really a pulled thread embroidery, with the rectangular mesh whipped over in red silk. The elaborate designs are typical of embroideries of the 16th century, and can sometimes be found in early pattern books. Many authors, looking for the origins of lace in this time cite this as a predecessor, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch. The contemporary Italian drawnworks like Punto Tirato a Tela Sfilata created a mesh from overcasting the lattice left from pulling threads out of the work. I had the opportunity to analyze both these types of work from examples in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the red silk overcasting is quite different from that used for the linen drawnworks .  Pulled work in the regular mesh hit rather a dead end with this kind of work, and was revived in the 18th century with the magnificent Dresden white pulled embroideries.

Comments: I hope this piece is whiter than it looks in the photos, and the focus is rather fuzzy. This has a lot of the same elements as the piece featured in LaceNews in April http://tinyurl.com/5rb34pm. It’s taken me a long time to learn to love Irish Crochet, and one of my aims is to look at enough examples so they can be put in some kind of order as to date and manufacturer. That’s why I have so many on the Ebay Alerts. This one has a little damage, some separation on one corner. The motifs are varied and abstract – pinwheels, what looks like an iris shape, trefoils, buds, incorporating some raised rings and ovals. Design is quite crowded, and the edges more complex that usual. Single picot brides.

Comments: Flemish pottery lacemaker marked ‘Made in Belgium’, with some numbers. I have one of these in my collection, same size, but some different colors – green shirt instead of blue. I’d guess this is a more modern piece. I don’t see any damage on this one from the photos given.

Offered by:  Ebay seller PBUR3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: Silk Irish Crochet is unusual, and to find one on the original backing with some kind of information on origin is really rare. Levey cites Hayward’s commissioning of ‘Royal Irish Guipure’ in the 1880’s, made of silk in imitation of Gros Point. I’m not sure I could convince myself this is a copy of the Venetian lace, but it does have some raised elements. Condition looks very good, and I might even imagine I see a few needlelace stitches in the centers of the motifs. Which is even better. The paper backing is probably not doing it any good, but it’s lasted this long…

Comments: This is one of those mystery pieces. It doesn’t look like an Italian ‘point de Venise a reseau’ of the later 18th century – the mesh is wrong. I also don’t think it’s an Italian plat point, remade later to add the reseau – the finish is wrong. And it looks like cotton, not linen, but I’d have to get it under the microscope to check. The edges are pure Irish – but again that could have been added later. Maybe it’s a 19th c Irish piece? Another possibiilty is a remade early English piece – the openness of the clothwork might indicate that.
