Comments: I think this is a French Bayeau point ground lace. It almost resembles a blonde, but done in cotton. It doesn’t have any of the fillings one would expect in Bucks. It’s quite short, but looks in very good condition.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. This is one of those odd Belgian needlelace pieces, almost a point de gaze guipure. No net ground. It’s a pretty simple design, a little discolored, but overall good condition.

Comments: A good collectible length of Brussels Duchesse. Note the flowing design and complex work in the bobbinlace. Two types of Point de Gaze – raised petal rose inserts with PtdG ground, and single needlelace roses on the lower edge. This was a higher end market piece. Seller cites some light brown storage marks and minor breaks and a small hole at one end. Overall the Point de Gaze looks in good shape. Seller has many detailed photos. Overall good condition.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. Another one of these ‘Point de Gaze guipure’ pieces, quite a complex collar. Note the interesting brides. this type of lace relies extensively on complex cordonnet work, rather simple fillings, and a flat appearance. Yet it has quite a pleasing lightness. Seller cites a few breaks, and a little problem on the inside collar ends. They look like minor issues to me. Basically good condition.
Sold for 148.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

Comments: A collar of Brussels application on machine net. Unfortunately there’s no photo of the thing spread out, but is appears fairly compact. Nice dense design which fills the space well. A few simple needlelace fillings, but it really relies on the bobbinlace. Neckline discoloration, and the seller cites 3 small holes in the net. Basically good condition.

Comments: Two pieces of Brussels Application on machine net. Reasonably wide, well worked with small nicly done bobbinlace motifs. Single sprigs in the upper ground. Needlelace ‘mode’ grids are used as fillings. Ecru color, and it looks in very good condition which is unusual for this kind of lace. Seller cites one hole that I can’t see.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. Occasionally you find Ñanduti in silk, and this is a good example. It’s an older piece with complex work in the sol motifs and in the joinings between motifs. It has some curious ‘piecing’ going on in the collar points, which I think is original. It has a wonderful gleam and looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Maltese shawl with lappet ends. Yes, the edges are a little ragged, but I like the large guipure motif in back, and the complex grid of tallies and ‘snowflake’ designs in the ground. Very unusual. So the condition is short of good, but it’s worth a second look.

Comments: A Rosaline perle ornament, fairly small and compact. Note the nice design of flowers in an oval with perl centers. The perls look needle made. The piece is a bit wrinkled as if it was washed at sometime. Basically good condition.
Hi Laurie,
Just one comment for : 3,25 m d’ancienne dentelle tulle brodé, , couture linge ancien
it sound a bit strange to me you are related this lace to an Arras lace since Arras lace is always made with a point ground net wich is also called “Lille” ground
This is a Mechlin lace from 1800, this design is really typical from the French “DIrectoire” style.
Good point – the lace is obviously Mechlin, but the design seems more aligned with Arras point ground work. You also see it in Valenciennes of this early 19th c period. My comments rely on Emil Hannover’s “Tonderske Kniplinger”, a book not easy to find, and despite the title it covers much more than Tønder lace. He illustrates both Arras and Mechlin laces of design very similar to this; but far more are shown in the Arras category. The Lille and Bucks examples he shows is always more free in design, and might be a little later in date. I should make this the subject of a ‘lace of the month’ post – once I get back to doing those.
Well, you are talking here about design and a design from the late 18thc period.
For sure we will find this kind of design in differents technical of laces, Mechlin, Arras, Lille, Valencienne or even “tulle brode” lace, since this kind of simple clear design was then in the fashion.
The point is: should we called the laces from the ground related to each specific technical of lace, or should we connect them together according with the design…….?
This could be an interresting subject, but as allways, it will take time to write about it…..
I am convinced. When this comes up again I’m going to call it ‘the type of lace’, French “Directoire” style, early 19th c. I think that’s a good solution until somebody investigates this further.
Oops. Late 18th early 19th c.
