No Ebay Alerts today – November 28, 2013

My apologies, I’m leaving for New York for a week on Saturday for some contract work, and am overloaded with preparations. I’ll resume the alerts on Sunday Dec 8th – or maybe the Thursday before if things aren’t too busy.

In the meantime take a look at Ebay numbers 350935129337, 161138889363, 181263043199, 181261673101, 181261686579, 181262228570, 181262265650, 181262280957, 181263036082, 161138936471, 161138936471, 181267161427, 190980384512, 190980392727, 190980429611, 231101609977, 360800007978, 291024171397, 360797628150, 350937741281, 310804957041, 200992571222, 200992725774, 291024926436, 370948970574, 291022818056, 181270030666, 370949913580.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-six items – November 24, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/mv9lmde Made in Sweden Lacemaking Bobbin Lace Roller Pillow European Knyppeldyna
Size:  ~24″ diameter.
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2013 15:10:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller happyspappy, Highland, Michigan, United States
Comments: A Christina pillow – the earlier version. The current version (see thumbnail on the right below)  is about the same dimension, a bright blue, and has a less of a hard edge on the roller (I have to admit I was always bothered by those hard raised endpieces on the roller on the older one). The new one sells for about $900 new. The apron turns independently of the center piece so you don’t have to shove the bobbins around so much. I haven’t had the opportunity to use the new one, so I’m unsure if the stuffing is as firm as the older model.  Note also on the older one, the metal hole above the nameplate – this is meant to hold the support for a tray.  You hardly ever find the tray, so some people have become inventive in making replacements.
This is a highly regarded pillow, and there’s a Christina pillow user group of very fine lacemakers.
Condition:
Modifications:  None. It is missing the tray, and this pillow also sometimes came with a round insert that fits in the well where the roller is.  I don’t see that here either.
Damage:  Could have been used, hard to tell. No obvious damage.
Soilage:  A little scuffing, probably will clean off.  There is a white mark to the left of the roller.

Sold for $645.50,9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/n97xvbj ANTIQUE LACE -IRISH CARICKMACROSS LACE
Size:  7″ x 188″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2013 15:20:16 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Highland, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of muslin applique on machine net. Could be Carrickmacross – but it doesn’t have the typical looped picot border, and there’s no sign of the bride fillings that you often find in Carrickmacross applique. Still, some of the motifs look like trefoils, and there are good needlerun fillings, so I’m not eliminating an Irish origin.  It is a rather plain piece, a short repeat only along the lower border. But quite nice looking.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  One seam.
Damage:  Seller cites some minor small openings.
Soilage:  Looks clean, but the whole piece is not photographed in detail.

390705464019   Sold for $65.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/mwlyd74 ANTIQUE FRENCH POINT DE GAZE LACE HANDKERCHIEF IN PRISTINE CONDITION ~ STUNNING!
Size:  13″ square
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2013 17:03:11 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruxelles. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Note the curious needlelace inserts in the center of each side, mostly decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Some good raised work in the bobbinlace – nice technique. The design is OK, but a bit conventional.  Records indicate that it was shown in an exhibition at the Detroit Art Institute in the 1920’s.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  A few pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh.
Soilage: It has that slightly wrinkled washed look.

271323270172   Sold for $282.80, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/lzvzoyj FABULOUS ANTIQUE FRENCH POINT DE GAZE LACE HANDKERCHIEF ~ STUNNING
Size:  12.5″ square
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2013 17:06:37 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: Another Brussels Duchesse handkerchief from the previous seller, this one with raised petal roses in the rather large Point de Gaze inserts. Again, notes say it was lent for exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the 1920’s.  In this piece, the Pt de G is a bit more elaborate than the bobbinlace.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  A few pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh.
Soilage: Looks a little washed, but not extreme.

281208425804   Sold for $282.80, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kayzgob Antique Handmade Ecru POINT DE GAZE Needlelace LACE  Collar Child/Doll * Unused
Size:  ~14″ across, depth 1-5/8″ to 3.25″
Starting Price: $24.00
Auction ends: Nov 24, 2013 19:18:02 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller winter-garden, West Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A small Point de Gaze collar, sewn to a light blue paper. It has some interesting decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but overall the general design is fairly conventional.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  No obvious damage from the photos.
Soilage: Looks like a cream color.  There seem to be a few small pink marks, perhaps ink?  Note how some of the fillings and the neckline edge are a little distorted, again this is usually a sign of past washing.

Starting Price: 8.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 25, 2013 11:42:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller claude580_0, Pazy, France
Comments: This looks like a narrow triangular Chantilly shawl, but the photos aren’t close enough to really determine if it is handmade. But what I can see has a correct feel. There is also no photograph of the back, so hard to tell the overall pattern. Seller calls the flower sprays ‘hortensia’.
Condition:
Modifications:  None, hopefully.
Damage:  Seller shows a photo of one small hole.
Soilage: Dark color makes it hard to tell.

Comments: Here are 6 listings of laces which might be early, and I have much the same comment on them, so I’ll put them all together.  Number them 1-6 starting from the upper left. They are all plaited bobbinlaces, with the work having the tightly packed appearance that we assume is very early. Partly from wear, and probably some from an unknown finishing process. Most have also been cut away from the original mounting cloths.
Elisa Ricci, Old Italian Lace is an excellent reference for laces like this. Number 1 is similar to plate 82 in her work. Plate 105 shows the same curved design as Number 4 (you see this technique in laces even today). Number 6 seems a more pure Venetian style. Number 2 seems a little later, more Genoese with woven leaves techniques.  3 and 5 look even later, more loosely worked, and 3 even has a kind of ground that you might associate with the l’Aquila region. 5 has tassels in the corners and some effort has been made to terminate the ends, probably not original with the upper section.
It’s a remarkable set of examples, and we can speculate 17th-18th c Italian, probably used for household linens. But unfortunately our actual dating techniques need to catch up with our opinions.
Condition:
Modifications: All cut away from the cloth originally mounted to.
Damage:  Main wear around the edges. The threads are fairly heavy, that helps with survival.
Soilage: Generally clean considering the age.

Comments: A drawnwork square, of the type known as Mexican Drawnwork. Produced in Mexico in the late 19th, early 20thc, and marketed in the US through an outlet in Texas. Skilful work with an impressive pattern.  You see these little squares quite often.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  one hole in the drawnwork lower left corner.
Soilage: Looks quite clean.

Starting Price: 85.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 25, 2013 14:17:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and a fairly naturalistic floral design. The fillings give some dimension to a typical romantic design – I like the little ‘swag’ of graduated sized rings below the flowers.  Note the long, isolated picots along the lower edge, a fairly recognizable technique typical of a unknown manufacturer.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut both ends.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a few small brown dot marks.

Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 25, 2013 14:20:17 PST
Offered by: Ebay beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: At first glance this piece seems a little messy, but look at it closely and it’s quite interesting.  Honiton, the motifs are a bit coarse, but not really snails/slugs style. There seem to be two patterns alternating with each point (if they had done one more point the ends would have matched better). What really makes the piece are the large variety of fillings found in every open space. In this it recalls some very sophisticated laces from later 19th c shops like Treadwin’s. Frankly, I’m not quite sure what to make of it.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: A few small brown spots.

Size: 7 cm x 174 cm
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 25, 2013 14:22:03 PST
Offered by: Ebay beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: This Honiton border somewhat resembles the piece reviewed above, but with a design that is more recognizable. The swirling feathery leaves seem to cradle a kind of thistle design. Above this it’s more scattered with lesser defined leaves. In the lower portion again there are many varied tally fillings.  Above are brides, but these appear to be needle-made. Hard to tell without more closeups. The piece is interesting, and the work finely done. The unusual footedge looks to be bobbin-made.
I wonder if these two pieces are by the same maker.
Condition:
Modifications:  None. Note, ends are finished.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: A few small brown spots.

Offered by: Ebay beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges border with tightly woven flowers and leaves – good raised veining. Picoted bride background. I don’t see any needlelace, even the tiny flower fillings look bobbin-made.  It relies on just a few motifs for an effective look.
Condition:
Modifications:  Ends unfinished, although don’t appear to be cut.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks quite clean.

Offered by: Ebay nedbraden, Spokane, Washington, United States
Comments: A bertha of Brussels Duchesse.  Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Note the extensive needlelace fillings of alternating needlelace rings and knots arranged in a grid pattern.  Overall pattern difficult to see when the piece is photographed on a white background. Conventional Duchesse motifs, what is more unusual are the large needlelace areas.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites two areas of broken thread. From what I can see the PtdG mesh looks intact.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos – a bit shrunken maybe from past washing.

Comments: Louis XV Mechlin border, mid 18th c. Lots of Mechlin of this period looks like it could be laid long-edge to long-edge and double the width – you can see this in lappets sometimes. The design is a little plain, lots of large areas of cloth stitch. Some quatrefoil fillings. It does seem to be in remarkable condition, aside from the stains.
Condition:
Modifications:  One join.  Part sewn on a silk backing.
Damage:  I can’t see obvious damage, which is unusual for a piece like this.
Soilage: Scattered brown age stains. Overall ecru color.

Comments: A dress front of Irish Crochet. Large impressive flowers against a rectangular picoted bride ground.  I like the bold look of this piece. I’m just wondering if the thread is silk – it seems rather shiny.  No closeups to tell definitively.
Condition:
Modifications: None

Comments: A fan of Brussels Duchesse with Mother of Pearl (Abalone)/bone sticks. Raised petal roses in the bit Point de Gaze insert.  In fact, look at the back view of the rose and you can see the simple support made for that raised petal.  Just a coarse net.  The bobbinlace is rather simple, note the technique of the leaves and the outer edge is the same.
Modifications: None
Damage:  Two broken sticks.  The lace itself looks intact.

Comments: A fan of Brussels Duchesse, although the Point de Gaze is limited to two roses, no ground, no raised petals. There are a few needlelace fillings in some of the bobbinlace. The bobbinlace itself is quite free and fills the large space very well. Some raised work in the bobbinlace.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:  One upper rib repair.  Can’t see any obvious damage to the lace.
Soilage: Looks clean, although unsure of the overall color. Sometimes it looks white, sometimes cream.

Comments: A ñanduti handkerchief, with palm leaf motifs on the outside and a series of roundels on the inside. Seller says it is silk, hard to tell from the photos alone. Silk is rare in this lace, and as a working thread it is a little stiff. You don’t get quite the elaborate motifs as you do with fine cotton.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:  A few small holes in the cloth. Some minor pulls in the lace.
Soilage: Looks quite clean.

Auction ends: Nov 21, 2013 13:07:04 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Spokane, Washington, United States
Comments: This listing may be ended by the time the Ebay Alerts are posted, but I’ll put it up anyway. Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw, and pictured on page 90 of her book, “Bobbin & Needle Laces Identification & Care”. Brussels bobbinlace lappets with droschel ground. Mid 18th c, Louis XV design with a rather heavy border and scattered motifs with some brides floating in the light ground. One thing to look for in a lace like this is the variety of perfection of the fillings. This set seems to rely mostly on a partridge eye motif embedded in a half-stitch background. The motifs are nicely worked, although the design looks a bit rushed. Laces like this are sometimes called Point d’Angleterre, although you have to be careful of the term and I don’t like to use it. It is supposed to indicate a Flemish product made for the English market, but it seems to be applied rather indiscriminately.
Condition:
Modifications:  Top ends cut.
Damage:  A few tiny holes in the motifs and some pinholes and small breaks in the ground. One small repair that I can spot. Actually quite good condition for a lace of this age.
Soilage:  Looks very clean, I don’t see any obvious spotting.

Comments: A Flemish pieced bobbinlace that has the look of 18thc Brabant. However it lacks the mesh ground found in earlier pieces. The picoted brides are very regular, and the overall condition is much better than expected for and early piece. The motifs are quite large with some use of raised edges, but not too much.  I’ve been studying a little about Sluis Duchesse, which Sister Judith learned as a girl, and I’m struck by how some of the flowers resemble this technique. Yet the large urn-like motif is so well done that it almost resembles a Valenciennes line-drawn pattern. Quite an impressive piece, and I’d call it later 19th c, and I’m happy to listen to different opinions on this one.
Condition:
Modifications:  One end is cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A Maltese handkerchief – three layers. Outer border is a series of flowers. Crossed woven leaves next to the center.  The inner part has an elaborate wire ground, cross in the corners and some isolated woven leaf crosses between.  It all works quite well.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  One break in thread near top center.

Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Nov 22, 2013 15:33:58 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: This is a Reticella needlelace piece, still using the heavily cut and drawn fabric structural base.  I would call the style Venetian, very open and light texture. Note the embroidery on top of the motifs. The technique looks appropriate, but whether it is actually a late 16th-early 17th century piece is open to speculation.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the end treatments from the given photos. The top border has been cut along the drawnwork line; it should look like the lower band at the top of the points.
Damage:  Occasional loose thread, minor.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with a large Point de Gaze insert of a flower basket. One rose in the flower, hard to tell if the petals are raised. The Duchesse bobbinlace is well done, with conventional motifs.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: One mended stick. Lace looks in good condition, but need more closeups of the needlelace to tell for certain.

Comments: A border of Youghal needlelace with picoted bride ground. Scattered flower and leaf sprays, well designed, giving an unusually naturalistic look to this piece. The clothwork is tight, with shading formed from more open stitches. I like that they don’t go overboard on the fillings.  Note, the foot edge is a little plainer than most Youghal borders.  This is quite a sophisticated piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the end treatments from the given photos, but seller says it is finished on both ends.

Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net. Mostly bobbin motifs, but a few needle-made circular motifs, and simple fillings in various open spaces.  A 2nd Empire romantic design, although the motifs are not quite as refined as is seen in the highest end market pieces. Given the excellent condition and the rather white slightly heavy looking tulle, I wonder if this is a later 19th c piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  Hard to see the ends but one does look finished.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos, and the tulle looks intact.

Comments: A tape lace flounce. I think it might be linen. This type of lace is not well documented, although it might be a Russian Yelts piece. There are also some that think the narrow tapes indicate an early Flemish origin, and these eventually developed into the raised edges of bobbinlace motifs. Here the tapes tend to widen out into more decorative designs, sometimes including woven tallies.  I’ll go with a 19thc eastern European origin, but have little confidence that is entirely correct.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends.
Damage:  Occasional frayed spots, very minor.

Comments: It looks like a long shawl of Brussels bobbinlace with a droschel ground, probably appliqued. Which would put it before ~1840. the lower edge has a different ground filling, and some interesting spider-shaped fillings. Interesting design of swags and hanging baskets.  Note the top and one side edge are finished with additional motifs, but to me the main piece looks cut off before these were added.  I think it might be a larger shawl that was cut down into this form.
Condition:
Modifications:  Might be cut down from a larger piece with edges added later.
Damage:  Nothing obvious that I can see from the photos.

Comments: I like the design of this piece, and the spider-like ‘islands’ in the ground look almost like stars. But I hesitate on the attribution, since this is more a tape lace than a pieced Belgian border. Yet I’m not too sure what to call it. I was thinking Lepoglava, but it’s a little off in design for that.  So for the moment I’ll go back to Belgium.

Modifications:  One end cut, can’t see the other.

Comments: A kind of shawl collar of Point de Gaze. No raised work, and no elaborate decorative fillings. It relies on well executed naturalistic flat designs, and is quite effective. Much different from standard Point de Gaze. I’ve seen a few small collars and borders in this technique, but nothing this large.

Comments: A border of Duchesse de Brussels. Flat Point de Gaze inserts, with simple sprigs. A few needlelace fillings in flower centers. The bobbinlace is a typical product – I like the way they treat the lower edge, the top is a little scattered.
Condition:
Modifications:  Ends are terminated, but do not appear to have been cut. Or perhaps someone just carefully cut around the motifs, afterall this is a pieced lace.

Comments: A guipure centerpiece with 6 doilies.  Given the French motif embroidery on the cloth centers, I’m going to call this a Cluny variation, French. You do see this kind of lace from time to time, recently very similar berthas have come up for sale.  See for example, the 14th item on the Ebay alerts of Sept 8, 2013 http://tinyurl.com/k2nmkve. The design is too compressed and regular, and the spider-like fillings are not typical of Beds.  It’s an impressive set.

Comments: A bobbin winder typical of the Le Puy area. Nicely carved wheel, and a metal key securing the bobbin. The windmill and cutoff bobbin holders are all there. You look for something complete in these items, and also the elegance of the piece. The arm holding the windmill seems to slide out from under the base – you can adjust the length.

Comments: An interesting fan with a painted insert, the lace is Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, quite finely done. The circular space for the painting looks original. Comments: This does look like an early 1700’s Devon border. It has the very dense patterning of contemporary Flemish pieces, but the motifs are a little more angular – sometimes you can see how the lacemaker worked continuously around curve, much like more modern Honiton roses. The overall design is also a bit unusual. At first it looks like it has a left-right symmetry around the large center motif, almost like a sleeve ruffle. But looking closer, it looks more like repeats in a border. The technique is excellent, although some of the details, such as the way the raised edges are handled, are a little off – look in the upper left corner of the first photo. You do see this often in the early Devon laces.
Condition:
Modifications:  Ends look cut.
Damage:  A few loose brides, not major.
Soilage: Looks very clean.

Comments: Two borders of Brussels Duchesse, which seem to be from the same set although one is much wider than the other. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, which are contained in diamond-shaped frames. Note the little needlelace raised rings in the centers of flowers, almost like what they do in Rosaline. Rolled raised work in leaf veins, and raised elements on halfstitch ground in the diamonds.  These designs are a bit unusual.
Condition:
Modifications:  Narrower one is cut on the one end that I can see in the photos. Can’t see the ends at all on the other piece.
Damage:  Narrower one: Seller cites a few broken brides and one small hole near engrelure. Occasional pinhole in the Point de Gaze mesh.  Wider one: Two small areas of broken brides, some pinholes in net.

Condition:
Modifications:  None

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.  Illustrated in her work “Bobbin and Needle Laces, 1985.  I got out the book, a small portion is shown in Fig 77, described as white Chantilly. I would hesitate on that exact attribution. I don’t think this lace is silk, and we do know that around WWI silk was hard to come by so many workers switched to cotton. These laces were made a lot in Bayeux, and generally go by that name.  It is a beautifully done point ground rectangular shawl with an elaborate romantic design that fills the space almost entirely.

Comments: This seller often lists equipment from the Auvergne area, including items very difficult to find. The lacemaker’s lamp is French, not the bobbinlace pattern which forms a case to store the focusing lamp. The oil lamp is a very typical accessory to the globe in France.
The little table I’ve never seen before, but the seller says similar items are in the Crozatier museum in Le Puy. It certainly is a possible lacemaker’s furniture item.  Seller also has a footstool listed.

Comments: I agree with the seller, it is rare to find Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net in this form. It’s just too delicate a lace for the wear expected of a doily. This one is quite well made, with a dense design that looks impressive. Needlelace rings in the ground and simple fillings for the flowers.
Condition:
Modifications:  None, but probably part of a now disbursed set.
Damage:  Nothing obvious, looks very good.
Soilage:  A few light age spots.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll call it a floral Bucks border, point ground, extensive honeycomb fillings with a few tally decorations.  Lille could also be a possibility.  The lower border takes up almost half the width of the design, nicely offset by the sprigs in the upper ground.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut both ends.
Damage:  Seller cites a few minor pulls.
Soilage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A round Maltese tablepiece, 4 concentric circles of decoration. Alternating sun and cross around the outside, massive mats of woven leaves just inside that.  I like the half-sun motifs which come next, then a simpler cross and leaf design next to the star-shaped silk center cloth. All very well done.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites a couple very minor pulls.
Soilage:  Seller cites a tiny brown mark on the silk cloth.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Chantilly flounce – wide and long (which is pretty common for Chantilly borders). This one looks very dark and a little dense, which is probably a sign of Belgian manufacture.  Good romantic design with alternating flower sprays and a kind of fan shaped motif with leaves on top. Lots of esprits in the ground.
Condition:
Modifications:  I can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage:  One repair 15″ long near one end, few minor pulls.
Soilage:  Black color makes it hard to tell.

Comments: A dress front of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, which are fairly elaborate and nicely done.  Good raised work in the bobbinlace also. An impressive looking piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: I think there’s a tiny hole in the upper right PtdG insert mesh. Otherwise fine. A few loose threads around neckline, very minor.
Soilage:  One small mark on a leaf center back edge.

Comments: I’ve written extensively on these focusing lamps http://tinyurl.com/3q39zro. This type is probably French, and you see variations with different length necks. As far as date goes, they were used in the 19th and early 20th c, so it is very difficult to attribute an earlier date without a provenance.  Copies are being made by modern glassblowers, but this one has a good older look to it.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage: A little cloudy on the inside, might be some lime deposit. Not bad, actually.
Soilage:  Looks good.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border with raised petal roses (double petals along the lower border). A nice looking design, well made – higher end market piece. The design fills the entire space well, with tiny esprits scattered in the bare ground.
Condition:
Modifications:  I think it’s cut on both ends.
Damage: Some holes in the mesh, especially hear the engrelure. Pinholes elsewhere. Looks like one small repair to a raised petal rose.
Soilage:  Cream color, a few minor yellow marks. I see one tiny blue mark like from a pen.

Comments: A figural Honiton Point collar, quite deep.  The brides are needle-made. The flowers look like tulips, and butterflies are scattered around as if they were flying through a flower garden.  The neck edge looks a little snails/slugs, but the rest is more advanced technically, probably a later piece.
Condition:
Modifications: Correction – no modifications.
Damage: A reader points out that there’s a missing leaf at the upper left near the neckline. That would be damage, not a modification.
Soilage:  A number of small brown spots throughout.

Comments: A long, narrow Point de Gaze border, no raised work.  Fairly simple design with a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings. A star-shaped filling ties the swags together nicely.  It does well with the narrow width, nicely finished with a pointed scalloped edge. I like the little 6-pointed stars used as esprits.  Note also the long, single spiked picots along the lower edge – sign of a particular manufacturer, name now lost.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage: No obvious damage from the photos. The mesh in particular looks in very good shape.
Soilage:  A few small brown spots.

Comments: A Honiton Point dress front, with needle-made ground. Very nice description by the seller.  Interesting how the motifs overlap the engrelure on the neckline. Just a hint of snail/slugs, although I do find the design a little crowded.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Minor damage to one filling.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos.

Comments: Silk imposes certain technical limitations in Irish Crochet – you tend to get a lot of padded circular rings that work well as grapes. This collar is quite well done with a variety of motifs, and note the unusual fillings in some of the trefoil-like structures (if you look hard at IC there’s almost always a series of three-branched structures).  It also has a little raised work.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Very slight – maybe one broken bride.
Soilage:  One small area of brown staining. Seller indicates the piece has been washed.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A Blonde de Caen hat veil, in much better condition than the two previous veils recently offered by this seller.  It does look at bit pieced together, see how the flower motifs in the ground crowd up against the outer edge, as if some of the racroc lengths don’t quite fit the form.  The lower border is quite elaborate and impressive. A later 19th c piece, I think.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although there isn’t a full photo of the piece, so it’s a bit hard to tell.
Damage: Expected damage to the net, racroc coming apart, some repair to the top edging.
Soilage:  I think I see a few localized small brown stains, a bit hard to tell.

Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A narrow rectangular scarf of Irish crochet, at least it is used that way to decorate the bodice. Might also be a collar since the backpiece is slightly triangular. Photos aren’t close enough to say how the picots are made. Interesting motifs, tightly worked.  A shaped piece.
Condition:
Modifications: Crochet is fitted to black silk taffeta top.  I think the outside edge of the lace has been cut from a larger piece, at least on the hanging ends.
Damage: Silk split on the inside. Lace looks good, probably protected by the backing.
Soilage:  A few localized brown stains.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Duchesse de Bruges, although there are a few ring needlelace fillings scattered around.  I like the way many of the leaves and scrolls are filled with large areas of half stitch – with a simple gimp they look quite modern. The rest is a more traditional Duchesse with a little raised work.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Looks intact from the photos.
Soilage:  Several age spots.

In Memorium: Sister Judith de Kreijger, d. November 6, 2013, Etten-Leur, Netherlands

monique 2The world at large and lacemakers in particular have lost a remarkable woman. Sister Judith de Kreijger died last Wednesday at the residential complex of the Franciscan Sisters in Etten-Leur, on the grounds of the former Withof convent. She had reached 100 on September 21st, and until a few weeks ago, was still actively teaching.

Sr. Judith on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

I am most indebted to Anneke Reijs for these notes on Sr. Judith’s life:

Elze de Kreijger was born on the 21st of September 1913 in Aardenburg in the southwest of The Netherlands. Her parents were quite wealthy and she had, in all aspects, a wonderful childhood.  When she was 13 she went to the Lace School in Sluis where she was an excellent student and lace became the love of her life.  She later worked as a youth counselor.

Her parents were not very happy with her decision to become a nun, but she told them that she knew that this was something she had to do. She wanted to do a lot of good for children and that she thought that a convent, with schools and boarding schools, was the best place to accomplish this. At the age of 24 she went into the convent with the Fransiscan Sisters, taking the name Sister Judith. The Withof convent was in the village of Etten, in the south Netherlands. The sisters were called “The Franciscan Sisters of Etten”, and later the villages of Etten and Leur grew together, now called Etten-Leur. Although she worked in different places, Etten-Leur was always her home. The convent building itself was recently sold to the municipality, and the few remaining sisters moved to a retirement facility on the former convent grounds.

Life in the convent turned out to be hard and, as she told me when I had my interviews with her for the biography, she realized over time that she would have had better opportunities to fulfill her ideals if she had not been in the convent. I asked her why she still stayed and she said that she had made her choice and her mother had taught her to finish what you started. Till her very last days she spoke with admiration and love about her mother.

She retired at the age of 65, meaning that she did not have to work anymore, but she stayed in the convent. Around that time her career as a lace teacher started. It was the beginning of a very successful 35 years of teaching, training hundreds of students. With her students she developed – out of the Sluis Duchesse she had learned when she was young – the Withof Duchesse, named after her convent. She was a talented designer and there are thousand of beautiful designs, worked by her students. Over the years her students went all over the world to teach Withof. By now there are many excellent teachers, for example Susie Johnson in the USA. Many of her students were, till a couple of weeks ago, still coming to the convent for lessons. And many of her students became good friends.

When we celebrated her 100th birthday, on the 21th of September,  so many students came to her party. It was a day she enjoyed immensely. And now, one and a half month later, her life is over. She will be missed, but she leaves so many good memories. And thousands of designs that will be well cared for.

A ceremony and internment will be held on Monday November 11th starting at 14:30. She will be buried on the convent grounds, with her lace friends as pallbearers. For her 100th birthday, Sr. Judith asked for donations for projects in South Africa, and memorials can be directed there. Write to Anneke at anneke@reijs.nl for information.

Right:  Withof Duchesse medallion worked by Anneke Reijs. The ‘rolled’ thread technique which outlines every edge was developed for Withof. It gives the lace a remarkably crisp and bold visual effect.
