Comments: A fan of Duchesse de Bruxelles with rather darkened lace. Imitation tortoiseshell sticks. The German term for tortoiseshell is ‘Schildpatt’.  The design of the lace is quite good, well beyond the usual Duchesse.  There is one large Point de Gaze insert with a small hole in the net, and also some PtdG roses without ground – I think the petals are raised. Aside from the discoloration and small hole, the lace looks in good condition. One small area of damage to a guardstick. The lace could certainly benefit from an appropriate wash to stabilize the piece.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.  This is a short piece, but unusual technique. It’s a Belgian needlelace variation on Point de Gaze.  No mesh ground, I sometimes call it ‘Point de Gaze guipure’. It is a very flat technique and the design at first appears a little plain. But I think it is appropriate to the technique and just takes a little getting used to.  From what I can see in the photos, the lace appears to be in very good condition. Wish there were more.

Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse collar with long points. One condition issue, there is a folded seam on both sides just below the main collar, but it looks like all the lace is there and this could easily be removed. The design is a bit fussy, but there’s some interesting chains of small flowers outlining the needlelace. Raised petal roses on the point de gaze inserts, and although it’s a little hard to see in the photos, the mesh looks intact.  There is some discoloration along some edges and some small brown spots. Overall yellowing, but basically in very good condition.

Comments:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.  No matter how much heat I take over this, I still love this kind of tatting. It’s the earlier kind where motifs are tied together. This technique has great flexibility in motif arrangement and allows for a very dense, frilly patterning. Note the needlelace stitches in the motif centers which is a typical Irish treatment. The piece has been removed from the center cloth, remnants of which are still there. A few ties have come undone, but overall very good condition.

Comments:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A Beds Maltese dress front.  Note the square ground with a few tallies, that’s unusual. Beds Maltese tends to be more guipure, although this has plenty of that kind of work.  It has a rather strict design organization, just a little conventional. You can see a lot of similarity of this work with contemporary French Cluny. The piece is discolored with a few spots, but the lace looks intact. Basically good condition.

Wedding veils of this period often have a more oval shape with less decoration at one end for the headpiece. So I’m not entirely sure what the original purpose of this piece is, although one corner might be a little more rounded. Naturalistic pattern, and excellent esprits of two types in the main ground. The seller cites mild age discoloration, few loose threads and pinholes, and 2 well-done professional repairs on one side. Basically very good condition.

Comments: I think this is a 17th c English needlelace, not Italian. The early English needlelaces used a knotted stitch, not a looped stitch, which is something really not recognized. It’s worth a paper at the next American Textile Society conference.  The graininess of this piece is typical of how that stitch lays. I’m also thinking some of it was photographed from the wrong side.  Good condition considering the age.

So condition is good, but the quality of the design makes up for a lot.

Comments: Another Chantilly shawl. It looks very dark, normally a sign of Belgian manufacture, but that’s a little anecdotal. I think it is lighter than it looks.  Note all the rings organized into grape patterns, quite unusual, and large area of honeycomb stitch – at least I think that’s what it is, that gives depth to the pattern.. Might be a more point de paris stitch which would point more toward Spain – photos aren’t detailed enough.. The design is very dense, even to the esprits in the ground. Condition appears a bit rough. A serious hole along the top edge, and sometimes the ground looks a little shredded (see near the bottom point).  But overall this is a very interesting piece.

Comments: A long, narrow needlealce, but I’m unsure of the date. The raised edges are a heavy wrapped cord which has been tacked down to the edges of the motifs with widely spaced couching stitches. The flat parts have some interesting stitch variations we;ll packed. But some the plain parts look almost like cloth, and a bit puckered, as if there’s been a tape laid down and the decorative stitches worked off to the side.  Other motifs look like perfectly reasonable needlelace linen stitch. Plus the whole thing is so beautifully intact that I’m thinking it’s a 19th c piece. Maybe an early Mezzo Punto piece, but then there’s that odd raised cordonnet. Condition looks very good.

Comments: A shorter piece of this border was listed last December, so I’ll just copy the review of that one.  A wide flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net. The needlelace is located in the flower fillings, and also forms shading in the petals by using what looks like the Point de Gaze mesh stitch. A good naturalistic design, note the sprays of wheat as a motif. The design fills the entire space, with no esprits. I think this is a later 19th c piece.
One seam, seller cites scattered openings at the top. Basically good condition.

Comments: This is the third Special Ebay Alert I’ve ever posted, and I do this only for truly exceptional pieces. And this piece (on the left below) is exceptional for two reasons. First it is a Point de Sedan lappet set, and this is a rare lace. Aside for some staining which could be removed by proper washing, it is in very good condition.
I’ve written extensively about Sedan at http://tinyurl.com/bewrwkj. What we call Sedan today has a very recognizable style, not quite Alençon, not quite the early Flemish flat grounded laces, with a rather crowded design (see http://tinyurl.com/avwodkp for another example). Thread quality ranges from a little uneven to exceptionally fine. And even though this piece was only posted yesterday, I’ve had years to think about it. Because the second reason this piece is amazing is that I have an exact duplicate of these lappets in my own collection (righthand photo below).  Occasionally you see this in early 18thc laces – there’s a notable early Devonshire lappet design that I’ve seen in 5 different collections. But for needlelace it is exceptionally rare. These laces are telling me something important. I’m just not quite sure what it is yet.

Comments: I’ve been discussing this interesting piece with the seller. I’m a bit stumped on this one. It has the feel of an 18th c Brabant, but the thread looks like silk (or perhaps a thick softly finished linen). The net filling appears to be a bobbin-made point ground sewn into the edges of the motifs. That’s not an 18thc technique. There’s also an unusual picoted plaited square mesh.  I’m wondering if this might be a later 19th c or early 20th c Italian copy of a Brabant lace.  Condition looks very good; just one small brown stain that the seller notes.

Comments: This piece has a lot of similarity to the bottom piece of Figure 135 in Levey’s Lace: A History.  Especially the 5-pointed flower, and the way the the veining is done. But the brides n the V&A piece are often double; the same for the similar piece in plate 110E  I wish I could examine that piece in the V&A more closely. In Levey these are dated 2nd quarter 17th century, right in the Van Dyke period.
This piece does have a look and patina of an early lace, but you have to be very careful in attribution at this early date.  Credible copies have actually been done in India. But I think I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt. The condition, apart from a few frayed places, is very good.

Comments: The length of this piece is extraordinary. I think it’s a later 19th century piece for several reasons. The toilé is rather open, typical of later pieces.  The length and condition are both very good, early pieces really don’t survive in such good shape. And the design and fillings look a little more modern, just a touch mechanical. It does have Herren Alençon characteristics, like the réseau fin along the border and tortillée at the top, which is not typical of later Alençon, although you sometimes see it in Burano.  No horsehair that I can see, but that was often taken completely out. Overall condition is very good.

Comments: The motifs on this bobbinlace application veil (machine net) are so fine that I might call it Brussels. But the fillings do seem to be woven tally grids, although I’d like a closer look. So I’m a bit unsure on the attribution of this piece. It is in very good condition, I only see one pinhole in the photos.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  I like the symmetry of the repeats, giving a rather vertical appearance and also putting more mass on the outer edge. Looks in very good condition, just a pinhole in the Point de Gaze mesh here and there.

It does look like late 18th century technique, but the form is very puzzling.  There are no photos of the tops of these pieces so I’m unsure if they are finished or if this has been cut apart. They are so long, I’m wondering if this some odd piece from the early 19th c.  Condition looks very good, seller says there might be some small well-done repairs.

Comments: A 19th century Point d’Angleterre handkerchief – fine bobbinlace motifs with a Point de Gaze ground. The motifs are finely done witha few simple needlelace fillings, not quite as over-the-top as you somtimes see. But the design comes off very well. Unfortunately there are quite a few small holes in the ground and a few missing fillings, so I’ll have to rate it short of good condition. But I like the overall design and it’s a nice example.

Comments: A Carrickmacross guipure handkerchief, enhanced with raised embroidery. Note the straight rather than the typical looped picots. Sometimes I wonder if this kind of work really was Irish, but I’m at a loss to figure out an alternative. This example is very gold and well worked.  A few stains in the center cloth, but overall very good condition.
