Write to them at least 4 days before the auction for additional information.
Smail:  Charles A. Whitaker Auction Co., 1002 West Cliveden Street,
Philadelphia, PA 19119

I’ve been remiss in never posting the Whitaker auctions, because they often include lace. This auction house often represents museum deaccessions.  The full illustrated catalog can be purchased for $30, and you can download a text-only catalog, which has quite a few lace items listed, most of which have low lot numbers and I assume will be sold on Friday. The Saturday sale includes two photographed lace pieces on the website:
Lot 538 – A Point de Gaze panel, 38″ x 47″. Might be a skirt flounce.
Lot 539 – Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata border with bobbinlace edgings, 17th c.
Uncatalogued items will be also sold in a ‘discover sale’ at the conclusion of the day on Friday.

Bidding: Bidders pre-register with the auctioneer in order to bid online, by telephone, or arrange to be an absentee bidder. All bidders must hav a valid credit card on file with CAWACo. with sufficient funds available to process all successful bids, buyer’s premiums, and shipping fees.  Register at http://tinyurl.com/qd74lfj.
– A buyer’s premium of 20% will be added to the hammer price of all lots sold on site.
– A buyer’s premium of an additional 3% (total 23%) will be added to lots sold through Bidsquare to also cover their fee.
– A bid slip for commission bidding is available at Absentee_bid_form  and be faxed or emailed or mailed by midnight, October 14, 2015.
– Telephone bidding must be requested at least 48 hours before the start of the auction.
– Online bidding can be done through Bidsquare at http://tinyurl.com/o7jqxhc.  Only Saturday will be on the online bid site – they say that online bidding slows things down. You must register both with Bidsquare, and for the specific the online auction, where you give them a credit card number.  (note, a lot of the CAWACo. literature says online auctions are held through Liveauctioneers, but I think it’s really Bidsquare. I was able to register for the Fall auction at Bidsquare just fine.)
– Payment must occur in full  on the date of the auction in cash, cashier’s check, certified check or money order payable in US funds through a bank in the US, Visa/Masterard, American Express, or by pre-authorized personal or business check.

Ebay Alerts! Twelve items – October 11, 2015

http://tinyurl.com/ogxd857 Pretty antique/vintage Brussels Duchesse lace bertha
Size: 42″neckline, 6.5″ deep
Starting Price: 45.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 11, 2015 11:40 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Bloemwerk, excellent technique. Note the use of the gimp instead of any raised work, the single tally fillings, and the ‘islands’ in the irregular picoted brides.  An good example of this type of lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites discoloration to inner neckline and 2 brown age spots to back edge.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

331672880613   Sold for 80.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/owukn8x Belgian style chainstitch Carrickmacross lace 19th C. Berthe collar shawl
Size: ~36″ neckline, ~8.25″ deep
Starting Price: $78.00
Auction ends: October 11, 2015 2:28 PM
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A bertha or narrow shawl of muslin applique on machine net.  The motifs are attached with chainstitch, which is a sign of Belgian work. Some good needlerun fillings. I find the floral design good, although a little simple in the motifs, basically meaning that there wasn’t any extra work in giving the flowers and leaves any finesse.
Yes, this technique was used in Carrickmacross applique, however I’d prefer to name both types of laces a more generic ‘muslin applique on machine tulle’. Then get into specifics about locality of manufacture.   (this is the type of lace used on Princess Diana’s wedding dress train).
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Pinholes and small holes in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller cites slight discoloration on part of the neckline.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

141792694612   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/nkbp6d7 A PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY FRENCH NEEDLEPONT LACE LAPPETS WITH AN ALENCON GROUND
Size: 22.75″ x 3″ (at tops)
Starting Price: 90.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 12, 2015 11:31 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A later 18th c pair of Alençon lappets, obviously treasured due to all the repairs. This is a later design with small designs in the centers and a narrow border full of decorative ‘mode’ filings around the sides and lower ends.  It is a simple concept which went well with the lighter muslin dresses that came in around 1780.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: I think the tops are close to original.  Looks like few motifs or parts of motifs went missing in the repair process.
Damage: Holes and pinholes in the ground, also many repairs including replacement of ground with machine tulle.
Soilage: Look clean.
Finish: Small creases in parts of the ground.

191708904982   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/pqkmcr5 C 1700 handmade Mechlin bobbin lace wide edge with Bizarre Silk design
Size: 3″ x 1  yard
Starting Price: $245.00
Auction ends: October 12, 2015 11:59 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United Kingdom
Comments: Wish there were more of this. An impressive Mechlin border with partridge eye fillings, also some complex snowflakes, and something approaching quatrefoils. Also a nice bar and zigzag pattern. It really doesn’t have much that can be called a ‘ground’ at this stage.  I find the design a bit too naturalistic to be considered in the Bizarre style (but it’s close), and yet the motifs don’t have much of the blockiness that later examples sometimes exhibit. The the set of Valenciennes lappets in the photo next to the listed piece from my own collection represents a truer ‘Bizarre’ style – they have an element of abstractness missing from the listed piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  1730-40
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Numerous holes, especially larger ones at one end. Frayed along lower edge.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory color.  Some localized brown spotting.
Finish: Diagonal creases.

131620437625   Val_great_lappets   Sold for $735.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/o2lo4xu DENTELLE ANCIENNE, Chantilly, ANTIQUE LACE
Size: 26.4″ diameter
Starting Price: 85.00 EUR
Auction ends: October 12, 2015 12:04 PM
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A Chantilly parasol cover divided into 8 sections (this is pretty typical of lace parasol covers). Elaborate floral design, well executed. Note, no esprits in the ground. I like the holes surrounded by gimp in the strapwork along the outer edge, and the way the little tendrils hang down in the mid section.  This would have had a light silk backing attached before mounting.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: I think it’s unused – the center hole where the spike of the parasol would go is not open.

141790915850   Sold for 169.00 EUR, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/nor66zy DENTELLE ANCIENNE, POINT DE GAZE, ANTIQUE LACE, BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE XIXthc
Size: 15″ square
Starting Price: 85.00 EUR
Auction ends: October 12, 2015 12:04 PM
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  Simple decorative ‘mode’ fillings, just some knots and small lines of rings.  It doesn’t need much decoration, the design fills the entire space quite well.  Excellent technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Several holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks like there’s a little localized faint browning.
Finish: No creases or wrinkles.

141790521895  Sold for 262.00 EUR, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qephv6z Neat antique/vintage white Bedfordshire lace collar
Size: Not given.
Starting Price: £10.00
Auction ends: October 13, 2015 11:02 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A beds collar with a typical arrangement of formed inner piece with a wide border on the outside and a narrow border on the neckline.  Raised tallies in the center part.  It resembles work done by the Bucks Cottage Worker’s Agency.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: About 1900.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, almost overly white.
Finish: There might be a center fold, hard to tell.

231712538648   Sold for 10.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/no6ye5w Antique/vintage Brussels Duchesse and Point de Gaze lace bertha
Size: 37″ neckline, 6.5″ deep.
Starting Price: £95.00
Auction ends: October 13, 2015 11:10 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Conventional motifs all around, but what really makes this piece are the large inserts of grid ring and knot decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Seller says it has been laundered and is a soft old white color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

331674619778   Sold for 123.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $30.00
Auction ends: October 13, 2015 11:10 AM
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A long insertion of Beds, quite a complex floral design. It does look like it is all one piece, including the upper narrow border. The design includes leaves and flowers with some nice gimp work and woven tally fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Alençon lappets, same general style as the ones reviewed above, but a slightly lighter design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: late 18th century.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: Holes in the mesh, some repairs.
Soilage: A little beige in color, some localized brown spots.

Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A short length of Mechlin with a 5-hole ground. The design is Louis XV, and they did experiment with grounds in this period. Beautifully woven, very precise work.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut, one seam.
Damage: One break in the foot edge, minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Offered by: Ebay seller things*most*delightful, Sacramento, California, United States
Comments: This Cantu table runner is unusual because of the inserts – looks like a pieced lace with a kind of dieppe ground added in. Otherwise it’s a conventional Cantu piece.

Date: early 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.

Ebay Alerts! Eighteen items – October 4, 2015

http://tinyurl.com/pojvhsp A Fabulous Pair Of 18th C Alencon Lappets
Size: 11 cm x 80 cm (this doesn’t seem right, I wonder if the 80 cm refers only to 1 lappet.)
Starting Price: 52.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 4, 2015 9:20 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Alençon lappets, must along the lines of Herren Alençon. Réseau fin along the edges, and either brides tortillée or bouclée in the inner parts (photos aren’t close enough to tell which. Single picoted rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings, along a few areas of more open clothwork stitches. The design is sparse, but ambitious with what look like small flower pots running down the centers.
Provenance: Seller discusses this, but no specific attribution.
Date:  4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Both appear to be cut at the top with an additional edge joined to the cut ends.
Damage: Small holes throughout, with a few coarse repairs.  I wonder if some of the réseau has been replaced along the outer edges near the cut ends. There appears to be something underneath one of the fillings, which might be a net.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Overall wrinkling.

351530586419   No bids.

Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 4, 2015 10:10 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress front with raised petal rose in the front Point de Gaze insert – the other two inserts are flat. Well organized and executed design using conventional motifs. No raised work in the bobbinlace other than rib work in the leaves
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites soft ivory color.
Finish: Light center fold crease. Looks unused.

Starting Price: 85.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 4, 2015 10:16 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Maltese collar with long frontpieces. Maltese crosses along the outer edges, sun design along the neckline. The guipure work in the center spaces is excellent, and not the complex ground with small crosses of leaves.  An impressive example in a form not often seen. I especially like the points along the outside of the main collar.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  Around 1900, could be later.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites areas of brown age spotting in the frontpieces.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. Looks unused.

Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 4, 2015 10:35 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of Point d’Angleterre cuffs – fine bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground. Note the highly raised leaves against halfstitch ground. I like the rows of needle-made flower fillings.  The technique is excellent, but the design seems a little disjoint. Like the larger leaves and lower flowers are a bit too big for the overall design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Numbered tags attached.
Damage: Occasional pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks a little beige in color from the photos.
Finish: They have a slightly shrunken look, especially in the fillings, wonder if they have been washed.

Size: 5.5″ x 28″
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: October 4, 2015 10:40 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Venetian Gros Point. Pieces like this are usually reassembled, and I can’t quite follow the design so I assume that has happened here. One of my favorite laces, note the very high relief and the fairly plain, but sophisticated clothwork. The picot ornamentation is rather subdued. All this points to an early piece in the range of dates for Gros Point. Look at how the grain of the clothwork follows the line of the design, and note the ornamentation worked into the clothwork. There’s nothing you can’t learn about needlelace by studying a good piece of Gros Point.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd half 17th century. The plainness of the design might indicate a date more toward the beginning of this range.
Condition:
Modifications: Reassembled. Header, footer, and brides are probably replacements.
Damage: Seller cites some areas of repair.
Soilage: A few localized brown spots.
Finish: Nice patina.

Comments: A border of Duchesse de Bruges, no raised work. The motfs seem a little large, but nicely done. Not sure what the flower is along the lower border.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Late 19th or early 20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. A small area of damage to the engrelure.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net. The design is quite free, breaking away from the earlier romantic formalism. Also note, no esprits in the ground. Simple rows of rings used as decorative fillings.   Note the looped picots along the outer edge.
Provenance: From a family collection. Note with the collection is dated 1920, ‘Given when her Ladyship married’. No indication of when that event occurred.

Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.

Size: ~29″ bottom edge, panels 6″ wide, 2.5″ center back.
Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: October 5, 2015 9:10 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A collar of Argentan needlelace, remade from something else, probably a lappet. Brides bouclée, rather plain clothwork and fairly simple fillings.  Just a few picoted rings used as decorative ‘mode’ ornaments. The cordonnet is largely unpicoted, and when they are picoted there’s no horsehair support. All of this is indicative of Argentan rather than Alençon. Although I like to refer to it as ‘Argentan style’, since it can be so difficult to tell the difference between laces from the two centers.  Typical Louis XV design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Assembled, and some of the mesh might have been added in the process.
Damage: Frayed brides, a few repairs, some pinholes. Actually not bad.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish: Overall wrinkling.

Comments: A Maltese frontpiece. Maltese crosses around the edges, and a nice guipure leaf motif  with a cross center front. The ground is an unusual square pattern of small flowers each with 8 woven leaves.  Large floral/cross medallions are found at the back. The neckline and back closing is a plaited edge.
Provenance: None cited.

Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.

Comments: An unusual scarf of Armenian knotted needlelace. These are more often seen as round doilies, often quite large.  Good regular work with an interesting triangle pattern and openwork edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: probably 20th century.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. You often see cut ends of the thread – you can’t use very long thread lengths in making this lace so it was frequently joined and cut.
Soilage: Looks like there’s some localized light brown staining, minor.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A delicate border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and naturalistic floral design. The work is quite fine in this piece, although it has seen better days condition-wise.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.

Comments: A Maltese cream silk mantilla. Flowers around the edge, and a fairly complex guipure design (very densly woven) in the centers and in the ends. Note the excellent woven leaf ground.  I find the central design a little confusion, but it is beautifully done.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: Around 1900
Condition:

Comments: A Chantilly shawl, although it’s difficult to see the exact shape. Might be a mantilla shape like the Maltese piece above, but the ends seem to be too large. Or it might be a narrow triangular shawl. The pattern does seem to fit the shape.
