Size: 23″ around neck, 108-110″ circumference, 30″ wide
Starting price: $45.00
Auction ends: Jul 12, 2011 07:56:47 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Very good Duchesse de Bruxelles shawl. No picture of the entire thing laid flat, but it looks sort of semi-circular. And it’s difficult to get a sense of the whole design, or to see if anything has been pieced together (the neckline looks a little odd, but not enough photos to tell anything). Needlelace roses have several layers of raised petals and very naturalistic form. Work on all parts is excellent. Few stains and openings, overall good condition.

Starting price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 12, 2011 12:00:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Very good Point de Gaze bertha. some roses have a double layer of petals – note the small windows in the petals. Needlelace fillings are pretty much limited to rows of rings within motifs. An effective design – not too crowded. A few small holes in the net, seller cites 2 small repairs at the neckline – otherwise seems in very good condition.

sold for 235 GBP, 7 bidders.

Starting price: $19.99
Auction ends: Jul 13, 2011 06:58:08 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Very good whitework handkerchief with needlelace ‘jours’.  These little fillings are of the same type used by French needlelace workers, hence the interest to the lace collector.  The slightly padded embroidery is quite good on this piece. There are some holes and weaknesses in the cloth, unfortunate, but not too bad.

   Sold for $113.60, 6 bidders.

Starting price: $4,500.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Jul 13, 2011 08:43:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gb-best, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Very large Venise tablecloth. Needlelace motifs are fairly large and closely worked, although the overall design is not very sophisticated. The urn, flowers, and leaves are appropriate for the scale – not sure I’d like eating my dinner with all those naked ladies around the border. With a piece like this one always has to decide between Belgium, Italy and China. I can’t see enough of the edge treatments of the motifs to guess Belgian. I think probably Italy, but China is a possibility. Some age spots and occasional yellowing, a few broken brides. Overall very good condition. Tablecloths like this show up fairly often on Ebay, but this one is notable basically for its size.

Offered by: Ebay seller highdesertgirl, edgewood new mexico, United States
Comments: ‘Lappets’ of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine ne, 2nd half 19th century. The separate lappets of the 18th and early 19th centuries are now joined together in a single piece. I like the separate bobbinlace free edge around the piece.  Very small, delicate design.  Condition appears very good – I can’t see any problems. Nice piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller highdesertgirl, edgewood new mexico, United States
Comments: Black mantilla headscarf, can’t tell what kind of thread. Not much variation in the roundels. There are no ‘palmate’ motifs that would indicate Nanduti, so this could have been made anywhere. Seller cites a few places around the edge with loose threads, but overall very good condition. An interesting piece.

Comments: Very good Rosaline collar with finely worked motifs and heavy raised rings. I assume the rings are needlelace, but not 100% sure.  The piece is a bit more advanced than the typical Rosaline Perlè. Condition appears excellent, I can’t find any damage.

Comments: Very good Pont de Gaze fallcap with prominent lappets. AThe needlelace fillings basically go around the outer edges in a series of rings, and roundels second layer in from the outside. The rest is filled with raised flower on point de gaze ground, no raised work. Slight damage to the net in the center of the headpiece, otherwise very good condition.

Comments: If you missed the piece that sold on June 16, 2011, http://tinyurl.com/6zjjpn3, you have another chance.  This one is from a different seller, and although the design is EXTREMELY similar to the other one, they are not exactly the same. This one has a bit more ground in the inner areas of the design, and also includes some Duchesse leaves at the tips and sides. The other one is all Point de Gaze. Quite a coincidence.  Condition looks very good, I can’t see any damage.

Comments: Beautiful combination of Duchesse and Zele needlelace. The needlelace has a heavier appearance than typical point de gaze, and a thicker, more defined edge. It’s one of my favorites. And interesting design combination – I almost wish the entire thing had been the Zele lace.  Some spots, one damaged flower center, otherwise good condition.

Comments: I wish the seller would stop showing white lace on this light brown manikin – make everything look a little dingy. Would help a lot if the pieces were spread out so you can see the whole thing at once.  Good wide Burano collar, seller says it’s a bit yellow. No damage that I can see.

Offered by: Carolyn Forbes, Ebay seller heartnsoul1, NEW ENGLAND, United States
Comments: Interesting wide collar of Duchesse – more on the Bruges side. Heavily raised needlelace jours in the centers of various flowers. Note the half stitch worked into the cloth of the leaves and petals – really gives them some depth. The string of flowers around the neckline looks a bit funny, almost an afterthought. Not enough closeups of that area to tell anything.

Comments: Dress front of an interesting bold Duchesse design. Note the square mesh in the ground of the larger motifs. There isn’t much variety in the motifs, but I like the combination. Maybe a little too large scale for this kind of item.  Condition looks very good, I can’t see anything wrong.

Comments: ‘V’ shaped collar of Brussels Duchesse – bobbin motifs with needlelace inserts. Nice naturalistic design and good technique. Some of the needlelace is integrated directly with the bobbinlace – no reseau ground. No raised work that I can find, which pupts it more ont he Bruges side. Comments: Lively design with a Milanese feel, 2nd half of the 17th century. I would expect a more elaborate border top and bottom in Milan, but it varied a lot. The repeats are intact, with a bobbin-made ground. A few broken threads, minimal damage.

Comments: Seems like a very small parasol. Nice ‘sunburst’ design, relatively simple in keeping with the small space.  The lace is in relatively good shape considering the wear it must have seen. Duchesse de Bruxelles – Duchesse motifs with Point de Gaze inserts. Bobbinlace has good raised work and half-stitch shading. Comments: I’m a great admirer of this kind of lace – mid 18th c round hole Valenciennes, made in France. This piece is quite short, unfortunate. It has also had a separate picot edge sewn along the bottom – don’t know if one could recover the original edge if this were removed.  This was often done in the 19th century to ‘revive’ older laces and give them a sharper edge.  The design on this piece is not terribly sophisticated – doesn’t have the really well-done ‘line-drawing’ effect that makes this work so special. A good study piece.

Comments: Only one corner of this small handkerchief has lace – and it is Alençon. Probably a later 20th century piece, nice fillings. Not the greatest design ever made. Note the horsehair in the picots. The size of the piece was a definite trend in Alençon as the lacemakers have tried to retain the tradition in the face of disappearing supplies of thread and little commercial interest.

The lacemaker would add another colored cloth on top.  This is a single piece pillow, not the two-part design where an additional piece could be moved to the bottom to give the bobbins extra room before moving everything to the top.  Looks in good shape, and just as the lacemaker left it.

Compare this Point de Gaze length with the previous handkerchief. They both have their merits. This length has raised petal roses, and fillings used primarily to define the roses. Comments:
Impressive looking piece when viewed alltogether – nice dense design in – an English flower garden. Nice tight work in the motifs, and definitely not the ‘slugs & snails’ approach to design. This is a very nice higher quality piece. I don’t see any damage in the photos, and the seller isn’t too specific about condition. Some photos look taken from the backside.

Big, bold, I like the pattern and overall look. Could be a table cover. Looks like Bruges Bloemwerk. We are really into the category of linens here rather than lace for clothing.  It does what it needs to do quite nicely. I don’t see any damage.

Comments: More in the linen category.  Big cloth, probably for the table, although the dimensionality of the massed leaves isn’t too conducive to tableware.  It could also be a shawl. An impressive looking piece, although the design is not very complex.  Trivial condition issues.

Comments: I don’t think it’s a bonnet veil, even with the ribbon threaded through the straight edge. The overall design is a bit ornate for a bonnet veil – they usually have an elaborate border and a more transparent body. And the scalloped edge would also be unusual. Unfortuantely the seller doesn’t show the whole piece flat to get an idea of the overall design.   What I can see looks very interesting, and condition appears exceptional.

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
Comments: Not sure why the seller is so down on this piece, I think it’s quite nice, and stains should come out well with a proper laundering. Seller cites a few small pinhole in the net, but I can’t find them from the photos. It’s a flat Belgian needlelace, no raised rose petals, no ambitious needlelace fillings. But the design is good and it works well.

Comments: Good scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Design gets more complex at the ends. Looks like needlelace is limited to lots of fillings, rings, and something representing stamens in the flowers.  Nice reaised work on the bobbin motifs. Looks in very good condition, I spot a hole here and there, some separation of the motifs, age discoloration, but nothing really serious.

Comments: Duchesse bertha, good dense design. Some raised work in the leaves, I don’t see any needlelace. Seller cites one broken bride an even age discoloration.  Otherwise very good condition – looks impressive.

Comments: I don’t think this is Belgian. I think it’s Honiton, based on the shape of the motifs, the type of net used for the applique, and above all, the extensive bobbin fillings. And it’s quite a nice one. Seller cites a few spots, but overall very good condition.

Comments: Good deep collar with lappets of Chantilly. The main collar seems to be all there, but is oversewn with a Chantilly flounce around the edge. Probably a Belgian piece, I’ve seen illustrations in books like Kellogg’s “Bobbins of Belgium” like this. Several tears, and seller says the piece is dry and fragile.

Comments: Handkerchief border is of Carrickmacross applique on machine net. Lots of shamrocks, exuberent design and typical looped border. It has a stiff look to it as though it’s late 20th century. Nicely worked and very good condition – only one small hole in the net.

Comments: An extremly rare piece – I’ve only seen one other. This is a Teneriffe lace wheel that was included in a box of Lux powered soap as an advertisement. It promoted the claim that lux was so gentle you could wash your fine lace in it.  The construction is quite unique, imagine two pie plates put back to back, and holes drilled around the rim. Pins go into the holes and the foundation thread is woven back and forth between these points.  It’s a little hard to explain.  I don’t know the date, maybe 1930’s? Front condition is OK, but otherwise a lot of rust.

Lace Exhibition: The Hapsburg Imperial Bridal Veil – “Wedding Belles”, Hillwood Museum, Washington DC, June 18, 2011 to January 1, 2012

The Hapsburg Imperial Bridal Veil
By Karen Thompson, volunteer, Textiles, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
Also, see: http://blog.americanhistory.si.edu/osaycanyousee/2011/06/the-finer-details-of-the-hapsburg-imperial-bridal-veil.html

The spectacular Austrian Imperial Bridal Veil was made for the wedding of Princess Stéphanie of Belgium and Austro-Hungarian Crown Prince Rudolf in Vienna in 1881. (Photo courtesy National Museum of American History)

The center back of the veil is decorated with the coats-of-arms of Belgium and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Twenty-one coats-of-arms, graduated in size, form a garland along the sides and lower edge of the veil. On the right side of the central coat-of-arms of Belgium, the lion, are the coats-of-arms of the provinces of Belgium: Antwerp, Brabant,  West Flanders, East Flanders, Hainaut, Liége, Luxembourg, Limburg and Namur. At the upper end the coat-of-arms of Brussels is added to bring the total to ten to balance the left side, where the border of the veil is embellished with the coats-of-arms of ten of the Austro-Hungarian provinces (Herrschaften): Bohemia, Old and New Hungary, Lombardy and Venice, Galicia, Austria under the Enns, Salzburg, Transylvania, Styria and Carinthia, Moravia and Silesia, and Tyrol. Illyriahas been omitted to balance the design. The coats-of-arms of Brussels (St Michael with the dragon) are located at an angle on both sides, inside the border.  The central part of the veil is covered with elaborate ferns, lilies, roses and other floral motifs on the gossamer fine ground powdered with the tiniest of dots. The portion that covers the head is enhanced with a pattern of small, delicate rosebud motifs.  The entire veil is bordered with a beautiful array of lace flowers.

(Belgian Coat-of-arms. Photo by author.)

Handmade lace rarely shows the date and place of construction, but worked in needle lace at the sides of the veil’s central Belgian lion motif are “Bruxelles 1880” and “Léon Sacré”. Queen Marie Henriette had commissioned Léon Sacré, a famous Brussels lace merchant in the 19th century, to have the veil designed and made by the best Flemish needle lace makers for her daughter’s wedding. Stéphanie writes in her Memoir  I Was to Be Empress, 1937, London: Ivor Nicholson & Watson:  “My mother devoted herself indefatigably to the preparation of my trousseau, which was to be as complete and costly as possible.”

The veil is 100 inches wide and 123 inches long (8⅓ feet by 10¼ feet or 2.5 meters by 3.1 meters) and constructed entirely in variations of tiny buttonhole stitches made with a needle and very fine 2-ply, S-twisted cotton thread. The Flemish lacemakers made about 28 stitches and 33 rows per square inch in the open ground between the motifs and 88 stitches and 102 rows in some of the denser parts. It is a beautiful tribute to their lace making skills. “For months the girls and women of Flanders had been busying their nimble fingers in the preparation of masterpieces of lace, intended for their Princess”, writes Stéphanie. The approximate size of the cotton thread used is 180/2 or about 80 threads in one centimeter (315 threads in one inch) if you place the threads snuggly side by side.

Princess Stéphanie of Belgium and Crown Prince Rudolf of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were married in Vienna on May 10, 1881 when Stéphanie was barely 17 years old. Princess Stéphanie: “My wedding dress, made of heavy silver brocade, was a marvel of beauty, with garlands and silver roses embroidered on the long train. A veil of Brussels lace, a gift from the town of Brussels, was fastened by a diamond brooch. Myrtles and orange-blossoms were interwoven with the magnificent diadem which Emperor Franz Josef had given me. I wore, too, the Order of the Star and Cross. It was fastened to a plastron sparkling with diamonds, once worn by Empress Maria Theresa. In my hand I held a beautiful prayer book, its binding made of exquisite lace.”  No close-up photos of the wedding dress with the veil have been located.

Rudolf and Stéphanie had a daughter Elisabeth Marie, born in 1883, but no son who could become heir to the Hapsburg throne. Stéphanie and Rudolf’s marriage was unhappy and ended with his suicide at Mayerling in 1889. Archduke Franz Ferdinand then became heir to the Hapsburg throne, but his assassination in 1914 in Sarajevo precipitated World War I and the end of the Hapsburg Empire. Seven hundred years after Rudolf I founded the Hapsburg Empire in 1218 the last Hapsburg emperor was deposed in 1918.  The new Austrian government confiscated all Hapsburg property, making life difficult for Princess Stéphanie and her daughter Elisabeth. To pay for living expenses the women likely sold personal belongings, including the Hapsburg Imperial Bridal veil.

Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post, then Hutton, bought the lace veil in ca. 1925 for the wedding of her daughter Adelaide.

But: From whom? exactly when? and how much did she pay?

An article in the Needle and Bobbin Club Bulletin in 1925 describes “…the wedding veil of Hapsburgs, worn by three unhappy brides of that household”…   This is questionable, and probably stems from incorrect information given to Mrs. Post when she bought the veil. According to the provenance given to the Smithsonian with the veil in 1964: “The Austrian Imperial Bridal Veil, known as the Hapsburg Lace, being the wedding veil of point de Bruxelles on a ground of cobwebby point d’Aguille, which veil was made in Belgium during the Eighteenth Century and presented to Isabella of Parma on the occasion of her marriage to Emperor Joseph II in 1760, and was subsequently worn at various Imperial weddings.”

It is correct that the veil was made in Belgium of Brussels needle lace “point de Bruxelles… point d’Aguille”. However, this type of needle lace, currently most commonly known as “point de Gaze” was not made until the middle of the 19th century, and the date 1880 is incorporated into the lace along with “Bruxelles” and “Léon Sacré”. Moreover, the central motif is the Austro-Hungarian coat-of-arms used from 1867 to 1918. The Hapsburg veil was made for Princess Stéphanie in 1880. Their daughter Elisabeth Marie of Austria could theoretically have worn it at her wedding to Otto Weriand of Windisch-Grätz on Jan 23, 1902. But it was sold before anybody in the next generation was married.

Marjorie Merriweather Post’s oldest daughter Adelaide Brevoort Close (1908-1998) wore the veil over a short dress and a long train at her January 19, 1927 wedding to Thomas “Tim” Welles Durant in New York. The veil was fastened with small clusters of orange blossoms at either side of her head.  Mrs. Post donated the veil to the Smithsonian Institution in 1964. It is currently on temporary loan to the Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens where it can be seen in an exhibit of wedding fashions worn by the Post family from 1874 to 1958. See: http://www.hillwoodmuseum.org/exhibitions/WeddingBelles/Exhib.html Wedding photos and a short silent movie of the 1927 wedding are included in the exhibit.

The Austrian Imperial wedding veil has been on display several other times since Mrs. Post bought it. The Bobbin and Needle Club displayed it with laces and jewels in Pierre Cartier’s galleries at 653 Fifth Ave, New York during the third week of Nov. 1925. From there it went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY during December 1925 and part of January 1926. (Needle and Bobbin Club Bulletin”, Vol. 9, #2, 1925)

From May to November 1980 the bridal veil was exhibited with Belgian Lace at the Renwick Museumin Washington, DC.   And the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York borrowed the veil for a display from June to November, 1982. Hillwood exhibited the Hapsburg veil from 1986 to 1990. From June 7, 2001 to January 20, 2002 the Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire Bruxelles (Brussels Art and History Museum) displayed the veil with other Belgian wedding laces from the 19th through the 21st Centuries. (Coppens, Marguerite, La Mariée…Princesse d’un jour, Elke bruid is een prinses)  After the current display at Hillwood, the veil will return to the Smithsonian Institution, American History Museum, where a portion of it may be seen during monthly behind-the-scenes lace tours.  Please call 202-633-3826 to sign up.

Administrative: Fire

Update 7/1/2011

Speculation is that we will be able to return to our homes on July 4th, but that is still only a guess. My deepest thanks to everyone who has written, your support is greatly appreciated! About 10,000 evacuees are now spread around the area, and all we really want is for our firefighters and emergency personnel to stay safe, and to know just how much we appreciate their efforts.
Laurie

Fire
Watching the fire from my back yard on June 26th.  It started that same day at ~10 AM – when a tree fell on a power line in the Jemez. I had gone to lunch with friends, when the sky was perfectly clear. When I came back home around 1:30 there was an enormous plume of smoke.  We evacuated on June 27th. By the time it was fully contained on August 3, 2011, the Las Conchas fire had burned over 150,000 acres making it the largest wildfire ever in New Mexico state history.

Comments: Milan, 2nd half of the 17th century, the irregular ground in these laces are some of the earliest attempts at mesh grounds. This piece has a lot of similarities with figure 202 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”.  The top edge looks a little funny – crowded and one leaf might not all be there., wonder if it was cut. Can’t really say for sure. Milanese laces usually have quite bold edge treatment, but photos on this piece aren’t close enough to tell. It’s a wonderful piece.

Looks in very good condition – with pieces like this  you have to pay close attention to the state of the net. Design is OK, small dots int he net indicate a little extra effort. Comments: Large Duchesse de Bruxelles shawl. Not enough detail in the photos to get a really good look at the entire piece, so it’s hard to determine the pattern, or if it was cut down or assembled from some other piece. Also can’t really see the the edge finishing. The design is very dense and it’s photographed to give quite an airy appearance. It does have a needlelace star filling at the centers of the daisy-like flowers. The petals of the flowers are interesting, not just a ‘sunburst’, but with some twists and overlaps.  I don’t see a lot of the typical Duchesse raised work – more on the Bruges side with just a heavy gimp and a little loose in the clothwork. Condition looks very good, but I’m having a little trouble forming an overall opinion on this piece.

Comments: Honiton handkerchief – large center part kind of overwhelms the lace. The lace itself is snails&slugs, but I like the little row of tallies around the edge. Gives it all a kind of Maltese look. Very minor defects, in fact I’m not sure I can see what the seller is talking about in the 2nd to last photo on the listing. Overall, it’s a nice little piece.

Comments: Good Irish Crochet collar with scalloped edges – note alternating motifs in the points. I like the overall design. Single picots on the brides, can’t tell if they are Clones knots. Rised rings in the centers of the 6-petal flowers. Overall an effective design. Looks in very good condition, seller says it is very white. Maybe bleached? Who knows.

Comments: Honiton handkerchief with a good, deep edge of lace. Small inked initials in one corner of the cloth. Border of roses, thistles, roses and shamrocks inside. A few loose fillings and a bit wrinkled, but overall very good condition. It’s got that kind of ‘thrown together’ look in snails&slugs design that can be charming or really awful. Comments: Honiton with a needlelace reseau. I really should know more about this form of collar – sometimes they are called ‘dress fronts’, and the large part goes at the front. Makes sense – sailor collars are for children. Opinions are welcome. Odd choise of background for the photo – photographing white lace on light backgrounds always brings out every defect. But it gies this one a nice, light feeling, and it does seem to be in very good shape (maybe a repair or two in the ground if you look closely). Still in the slugs&snails phase, but much more half stitch than in the handkerchief this seller is also offering. Along with the ground, it has a lot less dense feel.

Comments: Very good Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha. Good raised work in the bobbinlace, and the needlelace roses are more innovative than the typical raised petal ones. The needlelace and bobbinlace roses are also effectively combined and contrasted. Interesting use of needlelace fillings along the inside edge. A good, dense design that speaks well for this kind of lace. Minor defects.

Comments: I wish seller would put up a large photo of the entire piece – it’s hard to deduce the entire thing, especially the edge finishing from the fragments shown. This is an important piece. Look at Elisa Ricci’s “Old Italian Lace”, figures 16, 17 and 19 to see other examples. It’s really a pulled thread embroidery, with the rectangular mesh whipped over in red silk. The elaborate designs are typical of embroideries of the 16th century, and can sometimes be found in early pattern books. Many authors, looking for the origins of lace in this time cite this as a predecessor, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch. The contemporary Italian drawnworks like Punto Tirato a Tela Sfilata created a mesh from overcasting the lattice left from pulling threads out of the work. I had the opportunity to analyze both these types of work from examples in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the red silk overcasting is quite different from that used for the linen drawnworks .  Pulled work in the regular mesh hit rather a dead end with this kind of work, and was revived in the 18th century with the magnificent Dresden white pulled embroideries.

Comments: I hope this piece is whiter than it looks in the photos, and the focus is rather fuzzy. This has a lot of the same elements as the piece featured in LaceNews in April http://tinyurl.com/5rb34pm. It’s taken me a long time to learn to love Irish Crochet, and one of my aims is to look at enough examples so they can be put in some kind of order as to date and manufacturer. That’s why I have so many on the Ebay Alerts. This one has a little damage, some separation on one corner. The motifs are varied and abstract – pinwheels, what looks like an iris shape, trefoils, buds, incorporating some raised rings and ovals. Design is quite crowded, and the edges more complex that usual. Single picot brides.

Comments: Silk Irish Crochet is unusual, and to find one on the original backing with some kind of information on origin is really rare. Levey cites Hayward’s commissioning of ‘Royal Irish Guipure’ in the 1880’s, made of silk in imitation of Gros Point. I’m not sure I could convince myself this is a copy of the Venetian lace, but it does have some raised elements. Condition looks very good, and I might even imagine I see a few needlelace stitches in the centers of the motifs. Which is even better. The paper backing is probably not doing it any good, but it’s lasted this long…

Comments: This is one of those mystery pieces. It doesn’t look like an Italian ‘point de Venise a reseau’ of the later 18th century – the mesh is wrong. I also don’t think it’s an Italian plat point, remade later to add the reseau – the finish is wrong. And it looks like cotton, not linen, but I’d have to get it under the microscope to check. The edges are pure Irish – but again that could have been added later. Maybe it’s a 19th c Irish piece? Another possibiilty is a remade early English piece – the openness of the clothwork might indicate that.

Comments: Good collar of Irish crochet. The horseshoe design with the small raised rings is quite an early design.  Normally you see it in borders, so the scalloped collar form is a bit unusual. Looks in very good condition, I couldn’t spot anything from the photos.

Comments: The term Brabant is confusing. It is now generally used to indicate a large motif rather coarse Belgian pieced bobbinlace of the mid 18th century (see figure 270 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”). The assumption is that these pieces originated outside the refined centers such as Brussels. Even though the actual province of Brabant (which has had its boundaries changed thoughout history) now contains the city of Brussels. We would like to discourage the use of the term and encourage more research as to exactly where these pieces came from.  They probably were made in this region, but it would be nice to try and get away from the ‘city vs poor country cousin’ attitude. This particular piece has a refined design, and has a lot of similarities to the Levey example.  It is a bit short, and condition is not the best – wear, a few small holes, and one seam.

It almost looks like the top part comes off and can be used as a shorter stand.  Not entirely clear, there aren’t enough detailed photos. Comments: I would call this lace a good quality Belgian pieced lace, more a Bruges technique. The motifs are quite large and suit the function very well. It is a straight length cut to fit the corners, but the join is nicely done.  Looks in very good condition. Seller says she has hand washed it.

Comments: Duchesse de Bruxelles fan leaf. Good larged double raised petal roses in the needlelace. The bobbinlace doesn’t have any raised work, seems a bit on the Brugges sides. Fairly conventional design.  Very good condition, I don’t see any problems. Seller cites a few minor pulls.

Comments: I don’t like to gush in these postings, the sellers do enough of that just in their titles. But this Point de Gaze piece is really nice. Double layered rose petals, with some interesting windows in the toilé.  I like the fillings, nicely done with some innovation. Good grid of rosettes in the ‘D’ shaped motifs.  Flowers include poppies, and maybe bleeding hearts? Seller cites a few breaks in the net, and some repairs.  Note, seller washed the piece, but gives no details on how that was done. That information would be important in a piece like this.

Comments: Normally I’d pass something like this by, but I think it is really interesting. Damage is bad, and you can barely tell anything from the photos. But I’m guessing that it’s a Le Puy guipure. Designers like Jean Chaleye in the early 20th century would have come up with something like this, really pushing the technical boundaries. I love the spiderweb ground. These heavier black silk guipures are badly underappreciated.

Comments: Maltese? shawl – unusual for the large square shape. The work is also a bit thin, which sometimes leads people to think this may be a French piece.  Someone needs to look into this. Seller says there is one long and a few smaller repairs, and a few small holes and broken brides.

Comments: Early plaited bobbinlace. This was in the “450 Years of Lace” exhibition at the Allhallows Museum in Devon. Ex coll. Jane Page.  It resembles the designs in the Nüw Modelbüch published in Zurich in 1561, but I can’t find an exact match. That’s what collectors of early laces like to do – find a match in an early pattern book. Hard to say where this was made, Italy is a good guess.  The very dense plaiting is typical of Italan insertions, and there was a substantial amount of finishing done to get it to look that way.  But you must beware, these patterns have been worked extensively through the years, and without a definitive provenance, it’s hard to date these things. It is a lovely piece, in very good condition.

Comments: Great set of mid 18th century lappets. Dense pattern with good bobbinlace fillings. Vrai droschel surrounds all motifs, tied into the motifs – this is not an applique. The design  includes some small birds and butterflies.  I’m not sure why the seller calls these English – Belgian is certainly an option. They look in great condition, only very minor pulls in the ground. I’m thinking they might be cut a bit short – the ends are ragged but it’s hard to tell if anything is missing from the design.

The examples in Ricci sometimes show a more elaborate edge than the strait line of picots, and the ground is often more of a 5-hole variation.
