Comments: This piece is 19th century Point d’Angleterre, combination bobbin and needlelace. Very high quality, too bad about the length (22″ on top, 34″ on bottom, 7″ wide). It would be a major piece if there were more of it. I wrote to the seller about this, they never replied.

Comments: Yet another piece of Point de Gaze??? Of course this is standard Duchesse. The raised parts on the leaves don’t seem to have held up too well on the flatness end. Design does what it can with leaves and grapes. Not bad.  I’m not too keen on the border of the center linen part – seems a little overdone.

Comments: These come up a few times a year, condition varies widely. The cover for the roller looks replaced – might be original underneath? Can’t tell if the cover for the platform is the original cut-velvet-type material. I think that later in this company’s history they were a bit freer with the cloth type – I’ve seen various covers of felt.  The Torchon Lace Company is a lot more interesting than one might have thought based on past research – LaceNews will be doing a piece on this in the near future.

Collecting: German Klöppelfrau Raucherfigurs

Made by H.K., Germany.
5-1/4″ long, 3″ wide, 7″ tall. She is holding a lace pattern in her hand.

This rather scary looking figure is a Raucherfrau, meaning ‘Smoking Woman’. This uniquely German concept is actually an incense burner, although the idea comes off a bit better when the figure is a man with a pipe.  In English they are known as ‘smokers’. I’ve been able to find four interpretations of bobbinlace maker Raucherfraus, and am writing this piece primarily because I finally built up the nerve to actually try one out.  This involved buying a box of incense cones (they come in many different scents), disassembling the figure, placing the cone and lighting it, and reassembling the figure.  All the while trying hard not to burn down the house. The smoke lasted about ten minutes.

Herstellung und Berkaus, Handwerksschau im Seiffener Hof.
5″ long, 3″ wide, 6.5″ high. She is taking a coffeebreak from her lace work. The smoke comes out of the stove’s chimney.

A fourth Raucherfrau lacemaker has just come to light
and I’m revising the post to show it (12/11/2010). I don’t
have much information on it. The maker’s initials appear to be F.K.

Made by KWO, Germany. 5-1/2″ long x 3-1/4″ wide x 6.5″ tall.
The incense cone fits into a small metal dish on top of the stool.
The pillow has been turned around in order to see the bobbins.

The German lacemaker figures are overwhelmingly made of wood, and I will be doing several posts on them. Raucherfigurs are fairly steep in price, generally over $100.

Comments: This is a Venise tablecloth of the type often associated with Chinese work – and very unfortunately, such an association is uniformly assigned poor quality. Is this warranted? Comments: Looks like a good piece in excellent condition. Seller has it labeled as Brabant, but it looks finer than things one usually sees associated with that region. I’m guessing that the picoted edge is a later addition – you see this modification sometimes done in the 19th century.  This seller has a few other nice items, which for one reason or another I’m not listing here. But you should take a look.

Collecting: Belgian 1000 Frank/200 Belga Banknotes

This banknote is of interest to lace collectors due to the wonderful engraving of a lacemaker at work on the reverse. The front shows a portrait of the Belgian King Albert I (1875-1934, reigned 1909-1934), and Queen Elisabeth (1876-1965), along with a watermark of the king’s profile. Even though King Albert died in a mountaineering accident in 1934, his portrait continued to be used until the end of WWII.

The 1000 frank/200 belga note was issued yearly from 1927 to 1943, with the date engraved at the front top. Below are shown examples from 1934, 1939, 1941 and 1943. (Note the slight change in engraving in 1941.) The first example from 1926 is for 1000 francs, with a blue color and a little different background to the main engraving. This illustrates that the basic design was in use for the 1000 frank note a year before Belgium developed the belga in 1927. The first frank/belga notes also seem to have been backdated to 1926, although I have not been able to find an example.

A series of four 1000 frank/200 belga notes issued in different years from 1927 to 1943, along with a 1926 1000 frank example.  I’ve tried to collect examples in as good condition as possible. The plates held up well, with minor color variations, although wear seems evident by 1943. They all measure approximately 5-1/4″ x 8-3/4″.

This history of currency values during this time is complex, and covers a critical period from the aftermath of WWI through WWII. France and Belgium needed funds to rebuild following the devastation of WWI, funds which were expected from Germany, but slow in coming (one of the many factors contributing worldwide to the Great Depression). In 1926, these countries experienced depreciation and an abrupt collapse of confidence, leading to the introduction of a new gold standard currency for international transactions. A new unit called the ‘belga’ was introduced, worth 5 francs. The belga was tied to the British pound at a rate of 35 belgas (175 francs) = 1 pound and was thus put on a gold standard of 1 belga = 209.211 mg fine gold (13.9 cents in 1927 or $8.24 in 2010 dollars).

In 1935, the Belgian franc was devalued by 28% to 150.632 mg fine gold. The US had abandoned the gold standard in 1933, so the conversion based solely on gold values is no longer valid for this period.  Following Belgium’s occupation by Germany in May, 1940, the franc was fixed at a value of 0.1 Reichsmark, reduced to 0.08 Reichsmark in July, 1940. This is where it gets confusing – the Reichsmark was valued at 40 cents in 1940 and had fallen to 5 cents in 1941. Getting values after this is quite difficult, in fact no one seems to want to commit to a value at all in period between 1941 and 1944. In 1944, the franc entered into the Bretton Woods system, with an initial exchange rate of 43.77 francs = 1 US dollar set on October 5.  Following liberation in 1944, a new note printed in England replaced this one.  Again, the new issue was backdated to 1943, so there are two different 1000Fr/200Belgas dated 1943.

Below is a graph of belga values in dollars for this period, along with an estimate for what it would have been worth in 1945 if the belgia were still around. I also added two points for 1940/41. Values are taken from  http://www.measuringworth.com/datasets/exchangeglobal/. I leave it to the reader to convert these numbers into today’s equivalent currencies.

For today’s collector, uncirculated examples of this note can go as high as 100 euros.  One can find a wide range of lower prices depending on condition.

The dubiously redoubtable Franklin Mint managed to cash in on this note, including it in their 1983 collection of fifty “World’s Greatest Bank Notes”… reproduced in sterling silver, albeit somewhat reduced in size.

Franklin Mint copy of the 1000 frank 200 belga note – I don’t know if the lacemaker on the reverse is present. Etching on silver, 4.1 cm x 2.5 cm.

Comments: Good Belgian 19thc needlelace point-de-gaze type handkerchief with monogram – doesn’t look like there is any raised work. You can see a few small  holes in the ground on the enlargements – wish there were more photos.  Design is a bit fussy, outlines aren’t quite as sharp as they could be, and jours are not very innovative.  But a good example.

Comments: Very interesting Spanish Mundillo – bare wood with a lot of built in support for thread organization. These are usually found covered with some kind of padding, and this one is a little off-normal. The complexity of the woodwork is very attractive, and pieces like this often do extremely well in the US. I like it a lot.

Collecting: French Billets de Nécessité

The Billets de Nécessité issued in France around the time of WWI have many similarities with the English tokens previously discussed on this blog. Local governments issued small currency notes to compensate for a shortage in nationally issued bills.  The billet most known by lace collectors was issued by the Chambre de Commerce du Puy in three denominations; 1 Fr, 50c and 25c. They all bear the date 10 Octobre 1916. All have a seated Le Puy lacemaker at the left hand side. Note the three different colors.

Three notes issued in 1916 by Le Puy en Velay. Each measures 3-3/4″ x 1-3/8″, although the 25c note is very slightly larger.  Regularity of the cut retangular shape varies a lot. They are not marked with an expiration date.

The Le Puy lacemaker billet is the most famous for lace collectors, but it is not the only one with a lace subject. Alençon also issued two billets dated August 10, 1915, each with a border of Alençon lace on one side. I have not been able to find any reference to the Alençon billets in any lace-related literature.

Alençon billets, both dated August 10, 1915. The 1 fr note measures 4-5/16″ x ~3-11/16″, and bears an expiration date of December 31, 1923.  The 50c note is much smaller, measuring 3-3/4″ x !2-5/16″.  It expired December 31, 1920.

There is a possible third billet, also issued by Le Puy and dated October 10, 1916. It came in two denominations, 1 fr and 50c. I’m not certain about this one – the background may have a Le Puy guipure pattern, but it is difficult to identify.

The second Le Puy issue, dated October 10, 1916, and both expire October 10, 1920. The 1 fr note is 3-9/16″ x 2-1/16″, the 50c note is 3-1/4″ x 1-3/4″.

A set of postcards has been issued commemorating all the French Billets de nécessité – although I have not been able to find the Le Puy lacemaker one.  The Alençon one is shown below.

One of a series of postcards featuring the WWI French billets. They were issued by B. Sirven, Toulouse-Paris.

Circulated examples of these billets have sold on the Delcampe site usually for under $20, although none were in very good condition. Anyone interested in collecting currency, stamps, or postcards is well advised to become familiar with Delcampe at http://www.delcampe.net/. There is no better place on the net to find this kind of material. Their ‘Paypal-like’ partner is called Moneybookers, although it seems that name will soon change to Skrill.

Lace of the Month: Point d’Alençon – December 2010

The inspiration for this month’s featured lace comes from an email I received from lacemaker Carolyn Wetzel regarding discussions on the Needlelace Talk forum – my thanks to her and the list participants for pointing this out.

On November 16, 2010, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) added Alençon lace to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The web site http://www.unesco.org/culture/ich/index.php?lg=en&pg=00011&RL=00438 gives the details, and has an excellent video made at the Atelier National du Point d’Alençon. You can read about this in English, but in deference to the origins of this lace, I’m repeating the citation in French:

Le Comité (…) décide que [cet élément] satisfait aux critères d’inscription sur la Liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité comme suit :

  • R1 : Le savoir-faire de la dentelle au point d’Alençon est reconnu par la population d’Alençon comme un symbole de son identité et a été transmis de génération en génération ;
  • R2 : Son inscription sur la Liste représentative pourrait contribuer à renforcer le respect pour des artisanats similaires, tout en favorisant le dialogue interculturel et la créativité humaine ;
  • R3 : Un ensemble cohérent de mesures de sauvegarde, y compris des activités de documentation, de recherche, de transmission et de promotion, témoigne de l’engagement des dentellières et de l’État pour assurer la viabilité de leur savoir-faire ;
  • R4 : La candidature reflète la participation large et active des membres de la communauté à son élaboration ; ceux-ci ont fourni leur consentement libre, préalable et éclairé ;
  • R5 : Le savoir-faire de la dentelle au point d’Alençon est inscrit dans l’Inventaire du patrimoine culturel immatériel de la France, établi par la Mission d’ethnologie du Ministère de la culture.

The lace shown is 3-1/2″ wide (including the heading), and is typical of the romantic designs found in the later 19th century. The ‘rempli’ (solid sections) is a rather open stitch in contrast to the denser work of earlier examples. This provided a little edge in speed of construction, and one can often find large, elaborate pieces from this period.

Comments: This piece migrated here from Maria’s regular web site, and it is of the consistently high quality that is typical of her site offerings. No fussy raised work, just an emphasis on beautifully done ground (with some variation), very fine net, and well executed jours. I think the rather bulbous ends would argue for later 19th century.

Comments: I’m going to suggest that this is not Honiton. It just doesn’t have the right feel. I think, given the quality of the motifs, and what looks like a light square plaited ground, that is belongs to the Val de Gand category (although it is hard to tell exactly how the mesh is made). It seems to be assembled from about 5 different standard motifs, which would be consistent with Val de Gand construction.

Comments: This isn’t the first time something like this has recently come on the market. See the piece sold by the Mendes at http://www.mendes.co.uk/lace.fans.html, fourth piece from the bottom of the page.
The Mendes example
It certainly is interesting with all the figures. I don’t know how early it is – I suspect 19th century. The fan sticks here may have been shortened to accommodate the piece – there’s not enough detail in the posting to tell. The piece does have some condition issues where attached to the fan sticks.   I suspect these pieces are actually fan leaves – if they were collars I think the motifs would be rotated 180 degrees.

Comments: Good handkerchief with wonderful needlelace jours that really make a piece like this. Valenciennes edging.  Some small holes in the linen, and the monogram doesn’t seem to be the same quality as the rest of the work.

Comments: Duchesse with point de gaze doesn’t often lend itself well to handkerchiefs, but this piece is really quite nice. A few holes in the lower right corner, but overall good condition.
